Information for Prospective Students: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I get involved with TechShop Madison?

A: There are four ways to receive credit for participating with TechShop.

  1. If you are currently taking a service learning course, TechShop can serve as your service learning component (pending approval from your instructor)
  2. If you are currently taking a service learning course, TechShop can serve as a one credit add-on to your course for your service learning component (pending approval from your instructor)
  3. TechShop can serve as a one credit independent study with a faculty member of your choice (pending approval from the faculty member)
  4. TechShop can serve as a one credit independent study with the TechShop faculty team member, Randy Stoecker. You could receive one credit of Sociology or one credit of Rural Sociology with Randy as your sponsor.

Q: What is the timeline for involvement with TechShop?

A: The first step would be for you to fill out and submit the TechShop application. We will review your application, and if it appears that you will be a good fit for the program, we will ask you to participate in a brief interview. After the interview, we will help you register for credit in one of the above 4 ways. Then you will be required to attend the orientation and training sessions. After training is complete, you will meet the nonprofit partner that you are assigned to, and you will complete up to 20 hours of information technology transfer with the nonprofit over the course of the semester (roughly 2 hours per week). You will also be asked to blog about your experience as you go, evaluate and reflect on all aspects of the experience and your learning, and participate in brief in-person check-ins about once per month (which are also included in the hours above).

TechShop Madison would be happy to answer any additional questions. Please contact us if you have any questions.
