1. Job Opening: PHAR Coordinator

Overview:
The Charlottesville (Virginia) Public Housing Association of Residents
(PHAR) seeks a full-time Coordinator.  PHAR is an effective,
nationally-known public housing organizing group.  Charlottesville is a
dynamic small city, with a very progressive, diverse population, located
less than 3 hours south of Washington, D.C. and about one hour from
Richmond.  The Coordinator is the primary staff person for the
organization, oversees three part-time staff and the PHAR Internship
Program, and works closely with the Board of Directors to develop
strategies and run organizing campaigns.  This position requires
excellent communication and organizational skills and a strong
commitment to social justice.  The ideal candidate will also have
experience in non-profit administration, low-income housing, community
organizing, leadership development, staff supervision, grant writing and
reporting.  

Job description:
The PHAR Coordinator's primary responsibilities are coordinating the
day-to-day operations of PHAR, and ensuring the organization's long-term
effectiveness. This position reports directly to the Board of
Directors.  This is a full-time position.

The PHAR Coordinator is responsible for the following tasks:
1. Coordinates PHAR Board and Advisory Council meetings and activities,
including coordinating logistics, developing agendas in collaboration
with Administrative Committee members, arranging speakers and board
development activities, assisting with producing accurate minutes,
reminding members of meeting date and time, attending meetings, etc.

2. Represents PHAR at official meetings as appropriate/necessary,
including advocating for fair policies and laws, affordable housing
funding, etc.

3. Provides individual supervision, support, and technical assistance to
PHAR employees, including two Service Coordinators and a Grants Manager
(all are currently part-time positions).

4. Provides individual support and maintains close communication with
each PHAR Board member, keeping Board members engaged, focused and
effectively working to build the organization.

5. Coordinates the PHAR Internship Program designed to expand civic
participation by providing public housing residents with a six-month
intensive education and hands-on learning opportunity about public
housing and local government, community organizing, leadership,
community resources, and more.    

6. Coordinates administrative responsibilities, including bookkeeping,
ensuring tax reports and records are up-to-date, grassroots fundraising,
helping write grant proposals and reports, budgeting, financial
reporting, official/legal correspondence.

7. Other duties as needed.

The Public Housing Association of Residents (PHAR) is hiring two
part-time Service Coordinators.  PHAR is a nationally-known organization
governed by residents of public housing in Charlottesville, Virginia. 
Charlottesville is a dynamic small city, with a very progressive and
diverse population, located less than three hours south of Washington,
D.C. and about one hour from Richmond.

The PHAR Service Coordinators are responsible for the following:
1. Develop PHAR's case management system to foster residents' success
and stability.
2. Conduct outreach to understand individual residents' needs/strengths.
3. Provide referrals and appropriate supports to assist resident access
to supportive services.  
4. Network with service providers to ensure community-based, effective
services are available.
5. Make sure services are working well, provide case management and
follow-up with residents.
6. Assist residents in building support networks among themselves and
with others.
7. Keep records and provide accurate reports.
8. Other duties as requested.

PHAR Service Coordinators must be team players, have excellent
communication abilities, be skilled working with details, and be capable
of managing confidential information.  The ideal applicant will also
have knowledge of community needs, local services and experience
empowering low-income people to improve their lives and their
communities.  These positions report to the PHAR Coordinator and are
funded by a three-year HUD grant.
