Lead Education Organizer, Parent Action Committee
PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND POSITION DESCRIPTION: We seek an experienced
community organizer to lead the Parent Action Committee (PAC) in a
movement whose goal is to transform public education in NYC. PAC is an
innovative grass‑roots organizing project led by parents in the
Southwest Bronx, focused on the systemic improvement of public schools.
The lead organizer will guide the staff of two education organizers and
an intern and strengthen PAC’s broad base of parents and community
members, who are committed to education reform work, understand what it
takes to build a movement and are prepared to take bold action to
transform local schools and the NYC public school system as a whole. PAC
is a cofounder and core member of the New York City-wide Coalition for
Educational Justice (CEJ), working with the NYC-based Annenberg
Institute for School Reform of Brown University. PAC is a key component
of a broader community-building agenda at New Settlement that has gained
momentum progressively over the past decade. PAC continues to develop a
model of community organizing for education reform, using a
comprehensive, layered approach focused on local schools as well as
citywide policy and practice. Formed by a small group in 1997, PAC has
grown to include several hundred parent and community members, a strong
core leadership group, and a wide base of supporters and colleagues. Our
work has been featured as a model in action-research studies for a
decade, beginning with Community Organizing Case Study: School
Improvement in the South Bronx [March 2001: NYU Institute for Education
and Social Policy] and including Michael Fabricant’s recent Organizing
for Social Justice [2010: University of MN Press].
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: Staff development & supervision, development of
winnable parent-led organizing campaigns, coordinating the leadership
development for members, supporting growth of the membership base in our
local schools, coalition & alliance building, and working with grant
writer on fund development. The lead organizer convenes staff meetings;
leads the development of campaigns; oversees the implementation of
appropriate strategies and tactics; and provides leadership in
collaborating with other New Settlement departments on joint projects
and overall organizational work.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & SKILLS REQUIRED: At least three years as a
full-time staff organizer in a progressive social-change organization.
Passion for social justice and improving the lives of low income and
working class people of color. Experience with leadership development,
skills training and popular education. Staff management & supervisory
experience. Experience working in coalitions. Highly organized and able
to achieve goals in multiple task areas within established timelines.
Flexibility, lots of energy, and an ability to flourish in a fast-paced,
action oriented, environment. Excellent verbal and written communication
skills. Strong organizational skills. B.A./B.S. in relevant field or
M.S.W. preferred. Knowledge of NYC Public Schools preferred.
English/Spanish bilingual skills highly desirable.
SALARY AND BENEFITS OFFERED: $45,000+, depending on experience.
Comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k).
