Health Justice Organizer
New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a non-profit civil
rights law firm, is accepting applications for a full-time organizer for
our Health Justice program.
About NYLPI: NYLPI pioneered the practice of “community lawyering” in
the five boroughs of New York City. Our staff attorneys work in
partnership with community organizers, other non-legal advocates,
clients, and community-based organizations in the areas of health
justice, environmental justice, and disability rights. In addition to
traditional forms of legal advocacy, such as litigation, NYLPI engages
in legislative campaigns, media outreach, community education and
coalition-building in order to advance social justice in New York City.
About the Health Justice program: In our Health Justice program, an
organizer and a team of attorneys challenge racial and ethnic
disparities in the American health care system, including the
discrimination faced by clients with limited English proficiency, the
persistence of racial segregation in New York hospitals, and the
inequitable distribution of health care services in low-income
communities of color relative to wealthy, white communities.
About the Organizer position: The organizer will be an integral and
vital part of the Health Justice legal team, working alongside staff
attorneys to develop and implement the program’s campaigns and cases. In
addition to community outreach, the organizer will be responsible for
developing community campaigns, legislative lobbying, building
coalitions among community members and community-based organizations,
convening trainings and meetings, creating outreach materials, assisting
with plaintiff searches, providing technical assistance to community
leaders and activists, and educating the public, elected officials and
the media on issues concerning discrimination and inequality in the
health care system.
Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and immigrant rights required.
Strong writing, public speaking and organizational skills required. B.A.
and second language preferred. One to two years organizing or advocacy
experience preferred, but not required. Applicant must be a team player
with the ability to juggle multiple tasks under time constraints.
Applicant must also be flexible and creative, show initiative and work
both collaboratively and independently.
Salary commensurate with experience. NYLPI offers excellent benefits,
including health insurance, a retirement plan and medical and dependent
care flex plans.
How to apply: Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, writing
sample and three references (including daytime telephone number) to Joni
Carrasco at jobs at nylpi.org. Candidates should also complete the
following online form at the time that they submit their applications:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=cmNGdTBwNHJDNmVIWW1xd1Boa3NvbGc6MA.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
NYLPI is an affirmative action employer and actively recruits people of
color and individuals with disabilities.
