[ed: thanks to Chris for replying to Gail's query.]

From: Chris Cavanagh <story at web.ca>

I don't know the U.S. scene so well - but i do know you have an awful lot
more private foundation wealth there than we do here. I recall a
Minneapolis-based organizer who got a state grant - some kind of fellowship
that allowed her to take a year to do some research on social movements -
not exactly a sabbatical, of course, but still, such a thing could be used
to achieve some sabbatical-ness.

Here in Toronto there's a foundation that started a program four years ago
that they call the "Renewal
Fellowship<http://www.metcalffoundation.com/p_community_renewal.htm>".
It's pretty cool and i was one of the first three recipients of this. It
gave me a year's support at CDN$35,000 pretty much to do with as i pleased -
all in the interests of "personal renewal". Have a look at
their program
description and why not shop it to some of your local foundations and
suggest that they start something like that? I produced a 'zine and a
reflection piece about my experience which you can download here:

I've also just learned about a Soros Foundation program - again not really a
sabbatical - but it could have some potential:
