Chicago Jobs with Justice – Job Announcement
Executive Director

The Organization

Chicago Jobs with Justice (JwJ) is a progressive coalition of labor, 
community, religious and student organizations that work together to 
build a strong, diverse, progressive labor movement dedicated to 
fighting for the rights of working people and building the movement for 
social and economic justice. JwJ mobilizes direct actions to secure the 
right to organize, living wage jobs, health care, workplace justice and 
civil rights for all.

Chicago JwJ is part of a nation-wide network of over 45 coalitions, and 
the Executive Director coordinates with National JwJ staff and 
committees. See www.jwj.org for more information. Steering and Executive 
Committees, composed of representatives of organizations in the 
coalition, oversee the direction of Chicago JwJ, approve an annual 
budget, and hire staff.

The Position

This is an organizing position, requiring long, flexible hours and 
ability to juggle multiple responsibilities that advance the JwJ agenda. 
At present, this is the only full-time paid staff position. The 
Executive Director must be a self-starter, have strong organizing skills 
and ability to recruit and develop volunteers to secure their ongoing, 
systematic work within the coalition. Among core responsibilities:

* Building a powerful, vibrant, effective coalition: Recruit and develop 
leadership among member organizations, volunteer leaders and activists, 
including individuals pledging to “Be There” in solidarity with JwJ 
members. Cultivate active participation from leaders of member groups, 
recruit volunteers and coordinate the efforts of members and volunteers 
on campaigns.

* Campaigns and Mobilization: Develop and strengthen mobilization 
systems, help plan and carry out direct action campaigns that advance 
the coalition’s local and national goals. Produce leaflets, action 
alerts, etc. Recruit members as spokespersons.

* Administration & Fundraising: Conduct and coordinate annual 
fundraising and oversee administrative and fiscal management, including 
reporting to National JwJ.

* Staffing Committees: builds and provides leadership for the Workers' 
Rights Board and other JwJ Committees, with volunteer leaders and the 
Executive and Steering Committees.


Qualifications
- Solid commitment to the principles of social and economic justice;
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
- Ability to be a self-starter, and to work independently toward agreed 
upon goals;
- A strong ability to motivate people, coordinate volunteer activity and 
delegate responsibility. Supervisory / Leadership experience a plus;
- Demonstrated ability to raise funds.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a wide range of 
organizations and people;
- An understanding of the labor movement, religious organizations and 
other social justice movements;
- Prefer five years grassroots organizing experience - union experience 
is a plus;
- Willingness to work long flexible hours, including evenings and 
weekends (Comp Time provided);
- Proficient in basic computer skills, including database management, 
word processing
- Own vehicle available for work (mileage is reimbursed).

Also desired: Ability to speak languages other than English. Knowledge 
of, and/or participation in, Jobs with Justice in Chicago or other areas.
