Community Voices Heard (CVH) is seeking a part-time organizer to support
the Poughkeepsie chapter of our successful New York State Economic
Justice Organization.
CVH is a 14 year-old membership organization of low-income families in
NYS. CVH uses base-building, direct-action, grassroots-driven research
and coalition building to lead campaigns to win benefits for our
membership of low-income families. We work on economic justice in three
primary issue areas: welfare reform & workforce development, public &
affordable housing, and community & economic development. CVH currently
has chapters in four locations: New York City, Yonkers (Westchester
County), Newburgh (Orange County), and Poughkeepsie (Dutchess County).
The Poughkeepsie chapter has been in existence since 2007 and has
approximately 10 leaders, 70 members, and 600 individuals signed up.
The chapter is currently focused on issues around welfare reform &
workforce development at the local level. Additionally, members
participate in organization-wide statewide and national work with other
CVH chapters.
The primary responsibilities of the position will include:
· *Recruitment: *Conducting regular outreach/ base-building
activities at social service agencies, community organizations, and
welfare centers to recruit new members. Doing teach-ins/ workshops at
CBOs. Occasional door knocking.
· *Mobilization: *Doing mailings and phone banks in order to
get people to meetings and activities.
· *One-on-Ones:* Conducting intentional one-on-one meetings
with members identified for their potential leadership, as a way to
assess individuals' self-interest in organizing.
· *Committee Development: *Staffing an organizing committee
of local leaders to direct campaigns.
· *Leadership Development: *Working with identified leaders
to develop their leadership through writing testimony, speaking at
public hearings or press conferences, etc.
· *Campaign Development: *Facilitating issue identification,
campaign planning and campaign development processes to develop a local
campaign with leadership including demands, strategies, tactics, etc.
This is a short-term (until mid-December 2009), part-time position
(25-30 hours/ week) that begins as soon as possible (in late-August or
early-September). There is a potential, though no guarantee, for it to
extend beyond 2009. The Community Organizer will be supervised by CVH's
Mid-Hudson Valley Organizer, based in Newburgh, in partnership with our
Senior Organizer, based in NYC.
*_Qualifications_**:*
* Minimum 1-year community organizing, political organizing, or
legislative issue advocacy experience required.
* Experience in base building, door knocking, leadership
development, mobilization, and strategy development essential.
* Ability to work independently, yet take direction, according to
goals of the organization.
* Strong commitment to relational membership/community led
organizing, conducting one-on-one meetings with individuals, and
ability to identify non-traditional and community-based leaders
and people who want to be community leaders.
* Applicants must be committed to ideology of building community
power & share our commitment to membership grassroots
decision-making, radical politics & our analysis of power.
* Residence in and/ or strong familiarity with the Mid-Hudson
Valley, and Poughkeepsie in particular, greatly preferred.
* Spanish language skills are strongly desired, but not required.
* Driver's license and access to a car strongly recommended, though
not essential.

Pay rate is $400-450/ week. Mileage reimbursement for miles used for
work during the day (outside of transport to/ from work). Some personal
days, sick days, and holidays. Benefits do not apply due to the
temporary nature of the position.
