Great opportunity to grow and shape organizing efforts on local and
statewide education issues!
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: PETERSBURG COMMUNITY ORGANIZER
The Legal Aid Justice Center’s JustChildren program seeks a full-time
community organizer
in Petersburg, Virginia. Responsibilities for this position include
working closely with a group of
grassroots children’s advocates to identify issues, expand membership,
and conduct campaigns to
improve educational opportunities for children in Petersburg. Future
responsibilities may involve
expanding these efforts to include other community issues affecting
Petersburg’s low-income
residents. This individual will work closely with other community
organizers and policy advocates
on the JustChildren team to tie local campaigns with regional and
statewide efforts.
The Legal Aid Justice Center is a nationally recognized, non-profit
civil legal program with four
offices in Virginia. Our dynamic staff of attorneys and community
organizers pursue systemic legal
advocacy for all low-income Virginians using a wide array of strategies
including community
organizing, legal representation and statewide advocacy. JustChildren,
our award winning child
advocacy program, has organizers and attorneys in Charlottesville,
Richmond and Petersburg and
employs various strategies to help improve and expand opportunities for
Virginia’s most vulnerable
children. We encourage diversity, value unique voices, pursue our goals
with passion, and enjoy
having fun while working for the public interest. Please visit
www.justice4all.org to read more about
our work.
The ideal candidate has considerable community organizing experience;
has worked effectively with
low-income people and diverse communities; can work both independently
and as part of a team;
and communicates well verbally and in writing. An understanding of
education policy is desirable
though not required. Because the position requires evening and weekend
work and an intensive
relationship-building process within the community, current residency in
Petersburg or a willingness
to relocate is strongly preferred. The Legal Aid Justice Center is an
equal opportunity employer and
strongly encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply for
this position.
Salary depends on experience. Excellent benefits include a great work
environment with dedicated
people, health insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan, and generous leave.
