Executive Director
Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ), a premier Jewish
progressive non-profit organization located in New York City seeks a
talented Executive Director to lead the organization. JFREJ is a
membership-based organizing group working for racial, social, and
economic justice in New York City. Founded in 1990, we bring progressive
Jewish leadership in confronting racial and ethnic tension and economic
disparity within New York City. Through community organizing, political
education, and arts and cultural programming, we seek to expose
injustice and win policy changes at the local, citywide, and state
levels. JFREJ has recently doubled its membership and has tripled its
budget and staff in the past three years. Our work is unique – we
provide an opportunity for Jews in New York City to build a Jewish
identity with justice at its core, and to partner with ally
organizations led by low-income people, immigrants and people of color.
The Executive Director is responsible for leading the strategic,
financial, programmatic, and management operations of the organization.
The Executive Director also serves as ambassador to the broader
community: cultivating relationships with donors, allies and community
leaders; interacting with the media; and representing the community
JFREJ serves. S/he leads a five-person team and reports to the board of
directors. The Director will be expected to strengthen the programmatic
focus, hone the direction of this growing organization, and build
JFREJ’s capacity to implement effective organizing campaigns and programs.
We seek someone who is both a visionary and a strong manager with a
commitment to racial and economic justice and to JFREJ’s mission. S/he
will be able to strongly articulate Jewish social justice ideals and
effectively advocate for them with multiple communities in New York
City. The successful candidate will be a thought leader, effective
public speaker, have experience translating vision and ideas into
working programs, creating networks and strengthening collaborations,
and building partnerships with people of diverse racial and ethnic
backgrounds personalities and talents. S/he will be able to work with a
broad range of Jewish institutions as well as progressive communities in
NYC.
Relevant educational background and minimum of 7 years in progressively
responsible leadership positions are required, as is advocacy and
organizing experience, successful fundraising and management experience,
financial management & operations skills, experience in board relations,
and the use of technology.
