PUBLIC HOUSING ORGANIZING CAMPAIGN DIRECTOR
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
Community Voices Heard (CVH) is a 14 year-old membership organization of
low-income people working together to influence policy change around
issues that impact low-income families’ lives. Our current work focuses
on the issues of welfare reform & workforce development, public housing
preservation & improvement, and equitable community development. CVH
uses a combination of strategies including base building & mobilization,
leadership development, direct-action, legislative & advocacy,
grassroots-driven research, media & public education, voter education &
engagement, and coalition building to lead campaigns to win benefits for
our membership of low-income families.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
CVH is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to direct the
organization’s citywide campaign to preserve and improve public housing.
This is a full-time position that begins on January 1^st , 2008. The
position will be based in NYC but will require occasional out-of-NYC travel.
The main job responsibilities of this position will include campaign
development and management, supervising a staff of organizers, and
coalition & ally work at the local, state and national levels. This is a
senior management position and will serve as part of a Senior Staff
Management Team, contributing to shaping the overall organizational
direction and strategy.
Specifically, the position will include:
· Determining overall goals, demands and strategies for moving the
campaign forward; facilitating leadership involvement in strategy
setting; making key tactical decisions along with campaign leadership;
assuring that campaign plan is implemented by staff and members;
· Training, supervising, and evaluating campaign staff;
· Working with the Public Housing Coordinating Organizer to support and
staff the campaign leadership committee;
· Working with upper level public housing campaign leaders to further
advance their leadership skills and abilities;
· Working with other organizations including housing groups, tenants
associations and labor unions currently working on public housing issues
in NYC and nationally;
· Training resident groups &/ or staff members of various other groups
that work in public housing and want to develop their organizing skills
and connection to campaign work; and
· Assisting in fundraising and other organizational development activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Applicants must be committed to building community power,
membership decision-making, radical politics & our theory of
social change.
* Minimum 5 years community organizing, union organizing, political
organizing, and/ or legislative issue advocacy experience required.
* Experience in directing or playing leadership rolls in statewide
coalitions and/ or national level campaigns.
* Experience in base building, door knocking, one-on-ones,
leadership development, mobilization, strategy and campaign
development & implementation essential.
* Ability to work both independently as well as in a team, and be
able to take direction, according to goals of the organization.
* Experience supervising, training &/ or managing other staff.
* Spanish language skills are strongly desired, but not required.
