Hi Randy,
I am not sure exactly what you are looking for exactly, but in late
2006/early 2007 we interviewed a number of organizations across the
country with good leadership development programs/leadership schools or
trainings and also went and observed some of the trainings as part of
the process of developing our new leadership school and leadership
development program. I can send you my needs assessment, but it is long.
However, there are a lot of good models out there that try to not only
reflect the diversity of the group, but also build closer ties among
diverse constituents. Sunflower Community Action in Wichita, KS has a
great leadership school that is focused on bringing together their
various constituents. Their three main constituent groups are rural
Latinos, urban African Americans and urban Anglos. They have done some
really amazing things using story telling, films and other tools that
bring the group together. Their leadership schools are completely
bi-lingual. We also have just started to do a leadership school that we
are really trying to make sure that the curriculum reflects the
diversity of our constituents -- primarily rural white farmers, both
urban and rural Latinos and urban African Americans. We also have age,
geographic and economic diversity in addition to racial and ethnic
diversity. This was our first year of doing the leadership school, so
hardly to the point of being a model -- but I'd be glad to share the
curriculum with you, in addition to the notes and information I have on
what other groups are doing. Let me know if this is what you are looking
for and I can send it along to you.

Check out www.ncbi.org. Their training program is proprietary, but
offers excellent modeling of how to embrace multiple cultural identities
within your organization or coalition. You may also buy their book,
Leading Diverse Communities: A How-To Guide for Moving from Healing into
Action, from Jossey-Bass or Amazon and have a great curriculum guide for
group discussion.

Randy, the best, by far, I know in this business are the people at
Visions-Inc.org. Valerie Batts, PhD is the ED. (full disclosure: I am
a prospective consultant with them, because I have seen them in action)
they get organizing, power, and the leaders themselves are Black and
very experienced. Michael Jacoby Brown

Randy:
Some very interesting models out there these days, including two in Oakland:
Center for Third World Organizing: their MAP program trains aspiring
organizers in a sophisticated multicultural organizing,
based both on a theoretical leadership model and concrete mentorship
experience.
In the faith-based organizing world, a number of projects have in recent
years become far more self-reflective around their leadership model
within multicultural/multiracial contexts. OCO (PICO's Oakland project)
is among the best of them, driven in part by Rev. George Cummings work
in African American theological tradition and leadership.
