*Tenants & Workers United* is a leading member-based grassroots 
organization located in the Washington metropolitan area. TWU is 
nationally and regionally recognized in the field of low-income 
community organizing for racial and economic justice. Since 1986, TWU 
has grown to include over 1,000 multi-national, multi-generational 
low-income members and institutional supporters in organization 
campaigns and chapters across the Northern Virginia suburbs of 
Washington, DC. TWU has won or helped to win over $100 million in 
affordable housing, living wage jobs, health care, education, child 
care, and other community needs. We are looking for a Communications 
Director, a part-time Community Organizer for our Immigrant Rights 
Project in Prince William County, a part-time Community Organizer for 
our Education Project, and a Community Organizer for our Coalition for 
Housing Justice.

*_Communications Director_*

TWU seeks a* Communications Director *who will strengthen our ability to 
effectively frame our work and increase our capacity for effective, 
policy-oriented grassroots organizing in Northern Virginia. Working with 
our staff of accomplished organizers and low-income community leaders 
around the pressing issues of gentrification and affordable housing, 
healthcare for the uninsured, immigration reform, and educational 
disparities, the Communications Director will enhance our organization’s 
ability to build power and make systemic changes benefiting low-income 
people, people of color and women in the fast-changing Northern Virginia 
region.

*Principal responsibilities:*

· Create and oversee implementation of a dynamic communications strategy 
that enhances our ability to build grassroots power and win racial and 
economic justice.

· Oversee development and implementation of an “e-news” strategy – 
including a regularly updated CMS website, email updates and alerts, and 
other electronic communication of our activities and accomplishments.

· Maintain a high level of media contacts to ensure regular 
multi-lingual print, radio, and television coverage of our work and 
organization

· Assist organizers in preparing press releases and other materials for 
dissemination of our strategic analyses and frameworks.

· Coordinate publication (not including layout) of our quarterly 
newsletter, /Common Sense/.

*Qualifications:*

· Minimum three years of grassroots, advocacy-oriented communications 
experience

· Excellent oral and written communication skills

· Bi-lingual English / Spanish

· Strong ability to collaborate and work in teams

· Technology skills, including familiarity with CMS-based website, email 
broadcast software, and a range of office and database management 
software programs

· Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice, leadership 
development, and grassroots organizing

*_Community Organizer – Immigrant Rights Project in Prince William County_*

TWU is seeking a* Community Organizer *to build the power of 
predominantly Latina/o immigrants in Prince William County, Virginia. 
This is a half-time (approximately 20 hours per week) position to start, 
with a chance to increase to full-time. Using base-building, community 
organizing, and leadership development approaches, the organizer will 
organize, develop the leadership and build the power of hundreds of 
immigrant residents and allies to challenge and turn back anti-immigrant 
policies in Prince William County. The organizer will coordinate with 
another TWU staff organizer with responsibility for building support for 
the immigrant community within the African American and faith 
communities in Prince William.

Responsibilities include:

· Identify and recruit Latina/o immigrant community members.

· Develop community-based, strategic plans to challenge anti-immigrant 
policies at the county level.

· Develop the leadership of project members.

· Coordinate strategies with allied and other immigrant community 
organizations and leaders in the field.

· Shared TWU-wide organizing responsibilities for direct action and 
major events

_Qualifications
_• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to racial justice 
through base-building, low-income community organizing, and leadership 
development.

• Two or more years of progressive grassroots organizing, 
coalition-building, or labor organizing experience.

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

• Ability to use email and web-based technology for organizing and 
communication purposes.

• Strong Spanish-language skills. Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.

• Car and drivers license a must within 30 days of start-up; must have a 
way to travel to and around Prince William County before car is secured

TWU is seeking a* Community Organizer *to build the power of African 
American and Latina/o parents in Alexandria, Virginia for system-wide 
school reform. This is a half-time (approximately 20 hours per week) 
position. Using base-building, community organizing, and leadership 
development approaches, the organizer will organize, develop the 
leadership and build the power of African American public school parents 
and teens in Alexandria City Public Schools as an essential element of 
TWU’s College Preparation for All Campaign.

Responsibilities include:

· Identify and recruit African American, African and other immigrant 
parents and teens for project participation.

· Implement community-based, strategic organizing and campaign plans.

· Facilitate the active participation and leadership of project members.

· Coordinate strategies with organization leaders and community allies.

· Shared TWU-wide organizing responsibilities for direct action and 
major events

TWU is seeking an Organizer* *to head our /Campaign for Housing 
Justice/. The /Campaign for Housing Justice/ is a multi-year organizing 
campaign led by a coalition of more than twenty progressive religious, 
labor, smart growth, and other organizational allies. The Organizer will 
directly contribute to our organization’s mission to build the power of 
low-income people for racial, gender and economic justice in the 
fast-changing Northern Virginia region by coordinating our efforts to 
win affordable housing for low-income people of color and build a new 
majority movement advancing low-income people’s Right to the City in 
Northern Virginia. Principal responsibilities include:

· Conducting coalition-based campaign activities geared to winning 
affordable, low-income housing and strengthening low-income people’s 
participation in and control over comprehensive community development 
around the region

· Strengthening the existing coalition of religious congregations, labor 
unions, smart growth advocates, and affordable housing, environmental, 
and transportation groups.

· Building the base of tenant and low-income homeowners members.

· Developing the leadership of low-income community members - African 
Americans, Latin at s and immigrants.

· Coordinating research vital to the Campaign.

· Shared TWU-wide organizing responsibilities for direct action and 
major events.

_Qualifications
_• Minimum two years of relevant experience; housing and/or coalition 
experience preferred.

• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to progressive social 
change and movement-building.

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

• Strong policy research skills.
