First Position: COMMUNITY ORGANIZER – Monmouth County, NJ to organize
public school parents in ASBURY PARK for better schools
The NJ Statewide Education Organizing Committee, Inc. (SEOC, Inc.) seeks
a full-time organizer – beginning June 16, 2008 - to assist public
school parents in New Jersey’s low-income school districts to organize a
strong, independent parent organization at the district and statewide
levels. SEOC’s mission is to bring organized parents to the decision
making table regarding all aspects of school reform and educational
equity in the state’s 31 low-income or “Abbott” districts. SEOC’s Asbury
Park Organizer would report to the SEOC statewide director and operate
as part of the SEOC’s Organizing Team, which currently provides
organizing assistance to parents in Newark, Jersey City, and Asbury Park

Major Responsibilities:
1. Outreach to and recruitment of parent leaders, members, and potential
members on a daily basis, mostly in afternoons and evenings and often
weekends.
2. Building a strong city-wide SEOC Asbury Park Chapter (called the
Parent Listening Project), which includes parents from each of the
city's public schools as well as concerned family and community members.
3. Assisting parents in developing and executing an organizing campaign
by doing the following: helping the group to identify the issue they
want to address, choose strategies and tactics, and implement and
evaluate their course of action.
4. Leadership development – provide informal training to the group
leaders and members in organizing strategy and tactics and in
educational policy issues.
5. Assist in laying the groundwork for future organizing in nearby
districts.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will demonstrate dedication to
public school reform and equity, have experience as an activist, leader,
or organizer in neighborhoods, unions, or other grassroots arenas. In
addition, he/she will be a highly organized and responsible team player.
Required: At least 2 years of experience as a staff organizer or core
leader in a community organizing group, union, or electoral organizing
project. Strong writing, computer, and communications skills.
Availability in evenings and some weekends.
Preferred: A resident of Asbury Park or Neptune with knowledge of
community networks and institutions and/or is fluently bilingual
(Spanish and English)

Second Position: EXPERIENCED, Bi-LINGUAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZER – Paterson,
NJ - to organize public school parents for better schools
The NJ Statewide Education Organizing Committee, SEOC, seeks an
experienced bi-lingual (Spanish/Englilsh) Community Organizer to lead
our work in Paterson, NJ. SEOC’s mission is to bring organized parents
to the decision making table regarding all aspects of school reform and
educational equity in the state’s 31 low-income or “Abbott” districts.
We are an independent voice using direct action and other tactics to
work for educational justice. SEOC’s Paterson Organizer operates as part
of the SEOC’s Organizing Team, which provides organizing assistance to
SEOC Chapters in Newark, Jersey City, and Asbury Park For background on

Major Responsibilities:
1. Outreach to and recruitment of parent leaders, members, and potential

2. Creating a strong city-wide SEOC Paterson Chapter which includes
parents from the city's public schools in at least two neighborhoods as
well as concerned family and community members. Linking the Paterson
Chapter with SEOC’s work on state level educational policies.
3. Assisting parents to carry out direct action organizing campaigns.
4. Leadership development – provide informal training to the group
leaders and members in organizing strategy and tactics and in
educational policy issues.
5. Coalition work – maintain strong partnership with the Paterson
Education Fund and other partners within the NJ Education Organizing
Collaborative.
6. Supervise one organizer and potentially interns.
Qualifications: Demonstrated dedication to public school reform and/or
economic justice issues. Must have training and experience as an
organizer in neighborhoods, unions, or other grassroots arenas. Must be
highly organized and team player.
Required: Four or more years of experience as a staff organizer in a
community organizing group, union, or electoral organizing project.
Strong writing, computer, and communications skills. Availability in
evenings and some weekends. Bi-lingual skills in Spanish and English are
required.
Preferred: Knowledge of educational reform issues and knowledge of
Paterson community networks and institutions.
