Job Opening: Tenant Organizer at Neighbors Helping Neighbors
From: "Joe Catron" <joecatron at metcouncil.net>

Position Available at Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Bi-Lingual Tenant Organizer

Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) is a Sunset Park-based non-profit
organization whose mission is to empower low and moderate-income
Brooklyn residents to secure quality housing and build financial
assets. NHN provides bi-lingual (English/Spanish) services to tenants
and potential homebuyers. The Sunset Park community has a largely
immigrant population with Latin American immigrants the largest group,
followed by Chinese immigrants.

The tenant organizer position includes facilitating tenant meetings, and
assisting in the formation of tenant associations. The new Tenant
Organizer will also work with NHN's current Organizer to support and
develop tenant leaders working with the local tenant group UNA (United
Neighbors in Action) conducting leadership trainings and offering
one-on-one mentoring to tenants who emerge as leaders.

The position includes promoting tenants' rights through informational
workshops, and working through coalitions and the political process on
the local and city-wide levels to defend affordable housing and the
rights of low-income renters.

As a part of organizing the Tenant Organizer will provide one-on-one
counseling to NHN's walk-in clientele of tenants facing housing
problems: livability and repair issues, rent and eviction issues, and
landlord harassment. He/she will: advise them and advocate with them to
secure their rights; mediate with landlords; help them to navigate
housing court; network with other agencies and providers; and help them
to access whatever housing-related public subsidies may be available to
them.

Qualifications

The qualified applicant must be completely bi-lingual in English and
Spanish. Prior organizing experience with immigrant communities
preferred. Prior knowledge of housing law and public benefits is not
required, but ability to learn quickly is essential. When acting as a
counselor the applicant must also be a good listener, be able to
communicate effectively, be interested in working collaboratively with
co-workers and with tenants, be organized, be a creative problem-solver,
and be good at follow-through. An interest in and commitment to social
justice and affordable housing is important. Evening and some weekend
work are required but the workweek is 35 hours.

Salary

Approximately $35-$40K, depending on experience. Full benefits included.
