Shelterforce, a quarterly magazine published by the nonprofit National
Housing Institute seeks a multitalented associate editor who has a
passion and curiosity for print and online media -- a strong desire to
tell the story. The associate editor will work closely with the editor
and is responsible for content throughout the entire publication cycle
with ancillary responsibilities for web and other content.
We're looking for a journalist editor/writer who has the ability to
juggle multiple projects and work well with writers to produce lively,
readable, and informative magazine articles, ideally coupled with
knowledge of and interest in urban affairs, social and economic justice
issues, U.S. politics, and public policy. Knowledge of online and print
editorial and production processes, respect for and adherence to
deadlines are essential. Demonstrable knowledge of affordable housing
and community development issues will give you an edge.
Responsibilities include:
• Generating content and ideas for Shelterforce and nhi.org, including,
but not limited, to feature stories, departments, video, audio,
blogging, and polls.
• Assisting in proposal evaluation, identifying and working with new
writers to develop and outline article ideas. Oversee story development
(text and visuals).
• Trafficking production as well as supervising proofreading and
copyediting.
Qualifications:
• Two-plus years reporting and editing experience, online and print
• Excellent writing, verbal, and people skills
• Comfort level with technology and tools for website building and growth
• Knowledge of HTML and blogging software
Salary: mid to high ‘30s, depending upon experience. Health insurance,
pension plan.
