Senior Organizer/ Sustainable Communities

*_Organization Description_**:*

Community Voices Heard (CVH) is a 12 year-old membership organization of 
low-income people working together to influence policy change around 
issues that impact low-income families’ lives.

We were started as a welfare rights organization and have since evolved 
to work more broadly on economic justice. Our current work focuses on 
the issues of welfare reform, workforce development, public housing 
preservation & improvement, and accountable development. CVH uses a 
combination of strategies including base building & mobilization, 
leadership development, direct-action, legislative & advocacy, 
grassroots-driven research, media & public education, voter education & 
engagement, and coalition building to lead campaigns to win benefits for 
our membership of low-income families.

Our NYC office is located in East Harlem/ El Barrio and we have 
additional sites in three other small cities in New York State - Yonkers 
(Westchester County), Newburgh (Orange County), and Poughkeepsie 
(Dutchess County).

*_Job Description_**:*

CVH is seeking an experienced organizer to build and direct the 
organization’s work around community and economic development in Harlem. 
The position will work to build a policy-oriented organizing campaign to 
address concerns of long-term community residents around the shifting 
nature of their community and the lack of voice they feel they have 
within the evolution.

While the organization has been located in Harlem for many years and has 
a solid base of Upper Manhattan residents, particularly public housing 
residents, work to date around community and economic development has 
been limited. Leaders have identified this issue area as a critical 
component to add to our work given the dramatic changes they are 
witnessing occurring in their communities.

The responsibilities of the position will include:

· *Base Building & Mobilization: *Doing strategic outreach in Harlem 
(East, Central and West) and coordinating members and leaders to do the 
same; moving individuals met to participate in meetings, trainings, 
actions, etc.**

· *Campaign Development, Planning & Implementation: *Facilitating issue 
identification and the process of narrowing in on campaign goals, 
demands, strategies and tactics for a local campaign; facilitating 
campaign planning process and subsequent implementation.

· *Campaign Research: *Conducting background research on topics (e.g. 
zoning regulations, development approval processes, community benefits 
agreements, etc.) and targets pertinent to the campaign.

· *Committee Development: *Pulling together and staffing an organizing 
committee of local leaders to determine the focus of a campaign and then 
make ongoing decisions regarding the campaign’s direction; providing 
critical background information to leadership team so as to facilitate 
strategic decision-making.

· *Leadership Development: *Building the skills of active membership to 
understand the political underpinnings of the campaign (i.e. legal & 
policy context, power analysis, etc.) and to take on more and more roles 
in the campaign (i.e. giving testimony, facilitating meetings, 
conducting outreach, etc.) through both one-on-one development and 
workshops.

· *Coalition & Stakeholder Work: *Working with ally organizations and 
networks in the community, city, and beyond to move forward campaign 
goals and demands.

The organization is seeking a senior level organizer that while building 
this campaign can also join the management team of the organization, 
contributing to shaping the overall organizational direction and 
strategy. There is the potential for the position to develop and grow 
into one that includes supervision of other organizers and statewide 
campaign coordination.

This is a full-time position that begins on March 1^st , 2008 (or 
shortly thereafter). The Senior Organizer/ Sustainable Communities will 
work as part of a staff leadership team that includes the Senior 
Organizer/ Voter Project Director, the Policy & Research Coordinator, 
and the Executive Director.

The position will be based in NYC but will require occasional out-of-NYC 
travel to other CVH offices.

*_Qualifications_**:*

* Applicants must be committed to ideology of building community
power & share our commitment to membership grassroots
decision-making, radical politics & our theory of social change.
* Minimum 3 years community organizing, union organizing, political
organizing, and/ or legislative issue advocacy experience required.
* Experience in base building, door knocking, one-on-ones,
leadership development, mobilization, strategy and campaign
development & implementation essential.
* Ability to work independently, yet take direction, according to
goals of the organization.
* Experience supervising &/ or managing other staff and working in
teams a plus.
* Spanish language skills are strongly desired, but not required.

*_Salary / Benefits_**:*

Salary depends on experience (DOE); senior level organizer salary range 
starts at $40K. Excellent benefits include health insurance (medical, 
dental, vision), short- and long-term disability insurance, sabbatical 
policy, 403(b) retirement program, personal & sick days, generous 
vacation leave, and holiday time off. Organizing staff is also 
reimbursed for ½ of a monthly metro card as well as train fare and/ or 
mileage used for travel to/ from other offices.
