Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement is currently hiring for three 
positions, development director, community organizer position and 
housing and financial education. Iowa CCI is a statewide 
membership-based community organization. Our mission is to empower and 
unite grassroots people of all ethnic backgrounds to take control of 
their communities; involve them in identifying problems and needs and in 
taking action to address them; and be a vehicle for social, economic, 
and environmental justice. Since 1975, CCI has been successfully 
organizing on issues of housing, neighborhood preservation, family farm 
issues, environmental protection, workers rights, and immigration reform.


We have thousands of grassroots members across the state from all walks 
of life – urban and rural, black and white, immigrants and lifelong 
Iowans – who believe in the power of uniting and standing up for what’s 
right. CCI staff provides training and expertise, but it's our members 
who provide the focus, leadership and power in numbers to tackle tough

Development Director position description:

Iowa CCI is seeking qualified candidates to fill an essential senior 
management position that will have a large role in defining the 
organization’s future. Iowa CCI has stable leadership in place and is 
well positioned for substantial growth. This individual will help set 
the strategic direction during this exciting phase of growth, including 
hiring, training and supervising the staff necessary to accomplish 
fundraising objectives. Special emphasis will be placed on expanding 
large gifts statewide from individual donors.



Development Director Responsibilities

¨ Creating and implementing CCI’s annual fundraising plan

¨ Significantly expanding our major gifts program, including identifying 
and cultivating major donors

¨ Expanding institutional funder relationships through grant research, 
proposal development and relationship building

¨ Creating and growing an endowment

¨ Supervising development staff and managing fundraising efforts of our 
20-person staff

¨ Providing training and support to staff to help them successfully 
participate in organization fundraising

¨ Working with the board of directors as well as other CCI members to 
expand their role in fundraising

¨ Leading (in consultation with a consultant) a feasibility study and 
eventual capital campaign to significantly expand the size of the 
organization

¨ Ensuring that we have the capacity to meet our 3-5 year strategic plan 
goals



Qualifications

¨ Proven track record in leading development efforts, particularly major 
donor efforts

¨ Supervisory experience

¨ Excellent skills in managing donor relationships

¨ Well organized

¨ Adept at top level strategic direction setting and equally adept at 
tactical implementation of development work plans.

Community Organizer job description:

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement is hiring another community 
organizer to focus on social and economic justice issues impacting 
Latinos in central Iowa, with a specific focus on Des Moines (the 
capital of Iowa) and Marshall and Tama Counties (about an hour northeast 
of Des Moines). The organizer would work as part of a team to continue 
building a grassroots group led by Latinos to address issues like 
workplace safety, housing, predatory lending, police profiling, and 
comprehensive immigration reform.



Community Organizer Responsibilities:

· work with Latino members to identify issues that are important to them.

· research issues raised by members, and train members to do research 
themselves.

· hold planning meetings with Latino members to develop action 
strategies and plans for winning on issues and achieving goals.

· assist members in carrying out agreed upon strategies to win concrete 
victories.

· help carry out media strategies to raise awareness about issues and 
build support for our organizing.

· sign-up new members, and train existing members to sign-up new members.

· assist with other project activities as needed (neighborhood issues, 
statewide organizing, national/regional issues, etc.).

· do fundraising, grant writing and grant reporting.

Qualifications:

· fluent in both English and Spanish

· excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills

· ability to work well, and easily, with everyday grassroots people

· excellent writing skills in both English and Spanish

· good strategic thinking skills; attention to detail

· ability to be creative

· ability to work well as part of a team

· ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations

· not afraid to use confrontation as a tactic for winning justice

· good computer skills

· organizing experience and college education a plus

· must have a car or have access to a car on a daily basis

Housing and Financial Education Specialist job description:

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (Iowa CCI) is seeking a Housing 
& Financial Education Organizer to work with low/moderate income people 
in the Des Moines metro area on financial education and homeownership 
issues.



Organizer Responsibilities:

Conduct and coordinate financial education workshops/classes

Ÿ Coordinate financial education materials

Ÿ Market program to the community

Ÿ Coordinate speakers for financial education workshops/classes

Ÿ Co-facilitate with participating banks

Ÿ Track participation and effectiveness of the program

Do one-on-one financial education counseling

Ÿ Meet with clients individually

Ÿ Pull and review credit reports

Ÿ Provide budget counseling as needed

Conduct and coordinate home education tours

Ÿ Plan/conduct home tours for prospective homebuyers twice a year

Ÿ Collaborate with partner banks to advertise home tours

Fundraising

Ÿ Do grant writing and reporting

Ÿ Conduct other fundraising efforts as needed, including individual 
donor work



The housing & financial education organizer will also assist with other 
organizational-wide activities and efforts as needed. This may include 
doing community organizing with other staff to address critical issues 
impacting everyday people.
