L.A. moves step closer to mixed-income housing ordinance
For the last year and a half, members of PICO affiliate LA Voice
have been a key voice in a very powerful coalition pushing for
more affordable housing options in Los Angeles. Realizing the
strength in working together, LA Voice has been at the table
with other grassroots organizations such as ACORN and POWER, as
well as housing developers and policy experts. Together, they
have generated momentum for an ambitious Mixed-Income Housing
Ordinance, a first-ever in Los Angeles. This ordinance would go
a long way to making sure that those that work in Los Angeles
can live there.
This coalition has secured commitments from 9 of 15 members of
City Council for a citywide ordinance. Recently, members of the
coalition met with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to report on their
efforts and to ask for his leadership on this important issue.
Writer Martin Lastrapes accompanied the coalition on the latest
meeting with the Mayor. His remarks provide an inspiring
perspective on the fight to build a more just Los Angeles. To
