DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE
Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, a well established and respected
statewide citizens social justice organization, is seeking to hire a
Development Associate. The role of the Development Associate is to work
with KFTC’s Development Director, other staff, and members to implement
our grassroots fundraising and membership recruitment and renewal
program. Key responsibilities will include database management,
coordinating volunteers, implementing systems for thank you notes and
the pledge program, providing administrative support to staff and
leaders on fundraising and recruitment efforts, managing merchandise,
and more.
INTRODUCTION TO KFTC
Kentuckians For The Commonwealth is a community of people taking action
for justice. We work with people to organize in their home communities
and across the state. We help everyday community members become
extraordinary community leaders. We support community leaders as they
build effective organizations. Together, we win important issue campaigns.
Kentuckians For The Commonwealth is an organization whose structure,
priorities, and approach to change are based upon a handful of core
beliefs and values. We believe that social, economic, and political
justice are possible and can be won in this country through non-violent
means. We believe that many different yet complementary methods must be
employed to achieve this change and that the most critical is the active
and informed participation by average citizens in public
decision-making, especially those people impacted and oppressed by
powerful institutions and circumstances. We believe that individuals are
important, but lasting change is created by stable, ambitious, and
courageous organizations. We believe that credible organizations must
win tangible victories that impact the daily lives of the communities
and people they serve. We believe that only by overcoming discrimination
through education and practice can we realize broad social change and
that we can create change by learning, teaching, modeling, and finally
demanding real democracy in form and spirit.
Reflecting these beliefs and the circumstances in Kentucky, our members
have built Kentuckians For The Commonwealth. We are a statewide citizens
social justice organization, democratically controlled by a diverse
membership made up of low and moderate income Kentuckians. Our members
are organized in chapters, local organizations with independent
identities yet strong ties to the statewide KFTC. We work on a broad
platform of issue goals including economic justice, environmental
protection and stewardship of natural resources, and responsive
government. Parallel to our issue work run complimentary tracks of
grassroots leadership development, organizational development, and
building strategic alliances with like-minded organizations.
Over the 26 years that KFTC has existed, we have celebrated many
victories and accomplishments including passing numerous pieces of
legislation and winning a statewide constitutional amendment campaign.
We have helped hundreds of citizens across Kentucky build the leadership
skills, experience, and self-confidence needed to make a lasting impact
in their communities and their lives. We have built local chapters in
dozens of counties from the Appalachian coalfields of eastern Kentucky
to western Kentucky farm country to our state’s urban communities in
Lexington and Louisville. And we have built a stable organization
focused on our primary strategies.
KFTC is led by a Steering Committee, a board comprised of one elected
representative from each chapter and five officers who are elected by
the full membership. This volunteer board is responsible for setting and
evaluating organizational policies, goals and strategic direction.
Our staff team works with grassroots members and leaders to implement
organizational goals and priorities. The staff is led by an Executive
Director who supervises a management team consisting of four team
directors. Each team director leads a group of staff members focused on
specific roles, including organizing, communications, fundraising, and
administration. A major responsibility of the management team is to
insure effective coordination throughout the organization.
We currently have a staff of eighteen and are in the process of hiring
for two Chapter Organizers. In order to effectively work with our
statewide membership base, KFTC staff work from one main office in
London, Kentucky and four field offices in Louisville, Lexington, Berea,
and Whitesburg.
CURRENT SITUATION
KFTC has experienced record growth in the last three years. In that
time, we doubled our membership to more than 5,100 and more than tripled
our annual grassroots fundraising to nearly $214,000. Our staff has also
grown from about 10 members to soon-to-be 21. During this same time
period, KFTC’s program of work has also grown. We have major campaigns
focused on mining and energy issues, economic justice, voter
empowerment, restoration of voting rights, and economic development.
It is because of this growth that we now seek to hire a Development
Associate. There are three needs we hope to meet through this position.
1. The need for increased staff capacity focused on grassroots
fundraising and membership recruitment and renewal.
As noted above, KFTC has seen enormous growth in recent years. Continued
success in grassroots fundraising and membership recruitment is critical
to building our power so that we can win the social, economic, and
environmental change we seek.
In order to meet our 2008 goals of raising $200,000 in grassroots
fundraising, getting 1,000 members to recruit a new member, and
expanding our number of pledgers to 500, we believe the Development
Director specifically, and the organization generally, needs increased
staff capacity in this key area.
2. The need to take our database to the next level in terms of the role
it can play in our fundraising, organizing, and voter empowerment work.
KFTC maintains our membership records with an online database tool
called The Databank (www.thedatabank.com). We also maintain records for
folks who have interacted with our work at an event, by signing a
petition, or other avenue but who aren’t yet members. We utilize the
database for other functions as well including sending out action
alerts, tracking legislative district information, processing purchases
made on our website, and more.
Although we’ve significantly increased our use of the database in recent
years, there is much more that could be done to ensure that we’re
getting the most out of it to support our fundraising and organizing
efforts as well as our growing voter empowerment work. For instance, we
need to clean up database records to ensure efficient mailings. We need
to learn how to sync the database with our pledge program. We need to
broaden the voter empowerment functions of the database. And more.
A portion of the Development Associate’s time will be spent on managing
the database and ensuring the most effective use of it.
3. The need to alleviate some organizational administrative strain.
While KFTC’s membership and staff have grown in recent years, we have
not increased the size of our administrative staff. We’re sending out
more mailings, processing more requests, handling more donations, and
more. This has certainly strained the administrative staff which is
primarily based in London.
In order to alleviate some of the strain on the London staff, the
administrative support geared toward grassroots fundraising and
membership recruitment will be transferred to the Development Associate.
This includes mailings, processing credit card donations, the pledge
program, database maintenance, and more.
