The Statewide Education Organizing Committee, Inc. (SEOC) seeks a bi-lingual
(Spanish/English) organizer to assist public school parents in New Jersey's
Abbott districts to organize a strong, independent parent organization at
the school, district, and statewide levels.  SEOC's mission is to bring
organized parents to the decision making table regarding all aspects of
school reform and educational equity in the state's 31 low-income or Abbott
districts.  SEOC is fighting for parents to be respected partners regarding
decisions about school design, school construction, educational programs and
educational improvement generally. This organizing position is assigned to
building SEOC's Newark chapter, One Newark Education Coalition (ONEC).
SEOC's Newark Organizer would operate as part of the SEOC's Organizing Team
which currently provides organizing assistance to public school parents in
Newark, Jersey City, Asbury Park, and Plainfield.  Organizers will receive
training by seasoned SEOC organizers as well as opportunities to learn from
allied education organizing groups and education reform experts.

Responsibilities:  

 

1.    Outreach to parent leaders and potential parent leaders on a daily
basis.   On average, the Organizer   will meet one-on-one with a minimum of
5 parent leaders per week.  The primary purpose is to identify potential
leaders, develop relationships,  identify vital organizing issues, and to
document key findings.

 2. Coaching and consulting with parent leaders at the school and local
district level to assist in building a strong parent organization at each
school, and bringing these leaders together within the city-wide SEOC
Chapter,  One Newark Education Coalition.  On average, the organizer will
connect with least ten schools under the supervision of SEOC's Newark Lead
Organizer.

3.    With the Newark Lead Organizer and parent leaders, the organizer
will research district-wide organizing issues,  help design strategies and
tactics,  and actively reach out to leaders to prepare them before group
actions and events.
4.    With the Newark Lead Organizer and SEOC's Director, the Newark
Organizer will assist in recruiting and preparing ONEC leaders to
participate in SEOC's statewide campaigns for educational reform and
accountability.
5.    The Newark Organizer will assist in ONEC and SEOC grassroots
fundraising activities, and in citywide and statewide training sessions.
6.    The Organizer must generally be available in late afternoons and
evenings and on some weekends.

 

Qualifications:   The ideal candidate will demonstrate dedication to public
school reform and equity,  have experience and some training as an organizer
in neighborhoods, unions, or other grassroots arenas.  In addition, he or
she will have a  track record of effective leadership and be a highly
organized and responsible team player.

 

Required:  Willingness to learn direct action organizing methods and to
collaborate with an action-oriented team of leaders and organizers.   Good
writing and communications skills.

 

Very Highly Preferred:   Spanish-English fluency.  Knowledge of the Newark
Latino communities.

     

Salary:

The salary for this beginning level organizing position is $30,000 and up
depending on experience and qualifications.  This is a grant funded position
for one year with very good chances of extension for at least 3 years.
Included are health benefits,  travel reimbursement,  and opportunities for
training and travel to learn from allied organizing initiatives working for
educational justice.
