Organization seeks Lead Organizer
Tenants & Workers United (TWU) is a leading low-income, member-based,
grassroots organization located in the Washington metropolitan area. TWU
is nationally and regionally recognized in the field of low-income
community organizing for racial and economic justice. Since 1986, TWU
has grown to include hundreds of low-income members and supporters in
organization campaigns and chapters across the Northern Virginia suburbs
of Washington, DC. TWU is a growing organization, with an entirely
low-income community-based Board of Directors, a highly experienced
staff of 15, and an annual budget nearing $1 million. Our membership and
leadership is entirely low-income and 75% of our leaders and active
members are women and youths of color.
TWU is seeking a Lead Organizer to head our Campaign for Housing
Justice. The Campaign for Housing Justice is a multi-year organizing
campaign led by a coalition of more than twenty progressive religious,
labor, smart growth, and other organizational allies. The Lead Organizer
will directly contribute to our organization’s mission to build the
power of low-income people for racial, gender and economic justice in
the fast-changing Northern Virginia region by coordinating our efforts
to win affordable housing for low-income people of color and build a new
majority movement advancing low-income people’s Right to the City in
Northern Virginia. Principal responsibilities include:
· Lead coalition-building efforts among religious congregations, labor
unions, smart growth advocates, and affordable housing, environmental,
and transportation groups.
· Develop the leadership of low-income community leaders and progressive
allies supporting the Campaign.
· Conduct campaign activities geared to winning affordable, low-income
housing and strengthening low-income people’s participation in and
control over comprehensive community development around the region.
· Represent TWU in regional and national Right to the City
alliance-building efforts.
Additional responsibilities include:
· Shared TWU-wide organizing responsibilities for direct action and
major events
· Coordinating research vital to the Campaign
· Supervision of one or more regional field organizers
Qualifications
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to progressive social
change through base-building, low-income community organizing, and
leadership development.
• Five or more years of progressive grassroots organizing,
coalition-building, or labor organizing experience.
• Supervisory experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Excellent research skills.
• Ability to use email and web-based technology for organizing and
communication purposes.
• Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.

employment prospects of Latino day laborers and build successful
partnerships with employers, community businesses and supporters in the
Culmore area of Fairfax County. Our key goal over the next year is to
build public and community support for day laborers in the Culmore
community.
Responsibilities include:
· Building a community-business coalition in support of the community’s
day laborers
· Linking day laborers to job training and other employment-enhancement
opportunities
· Matching employers’ needs for skilled and unskilled labor with
appropriate workers
· Shared TWU-wide organizing responsibilities for direct action and
major events
Qualifications

TWU is seeking a Community Organizer to build the power of predominantly
Latina/o immigrants in Prince William County. This is a half-time
(approximately 20 hours per week) position to start, with a chance to
increase to full-time. Using base-building, community organizing, and
leadership development approaches, the organizer will organize, develop
the leadership and build the power of hundreds of immigrant residents
and allies to challenge and turn back anti-immigrant policies in Prince
William County, Virginia.
Responsibilities include:
· Identify and recruit Latina/o immigrant community members.
· Develop community-based, strategic plans to challenge anti-immigrant
policies at the county level.
· Develop the leadership of project members.
· Coordinate strategies with allied and other immigrant community
organizations and leaders in the field.
· Shared TWU-wide organizing responsibilities for direct action and
major events
Qualifications
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to racial justice through
base-building, low-income community organizing, and leadership development.
• Two or more years of progressive grassroots organizing,
coalition-building, or labor organizing experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Ability to use email and web-based technology for organizing and
communication purposes.
• Strong Spanish-language skills. Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
• Car and drivers license a must within 30 days of start-up.
