JOB OPENING: Lead Organizer/Assistant Director
THE ORGANIZATION: SOCM is a state-wide, multi-issue, multi-racial
member-run 35 year old community organization based primarily in rural
communities and small towns in Tennessee. Current organization-wide
campaigns are around strip mining including mountaintop removal, aerial
spraying of toxic chemicals, voter rights, and state tax reform. Local
organizing in chapters takes place around many issues of local impact.
SOCM is committed to organizing that builds greater racial diversity and
leadership development of members.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision of organizing staff including check-ins
about work plans and consulting as needed; coordination of training and
development opportunities for staff and members; coordination assistance
in some state-wide campaigns. Assist Director in proposal writing and
foundation contacts, responding to coalition and administrative
requests, strategic planning, and other identified administrative needs.
REQUIREMENTS: Commitment to environmental, social, and economic justice
through community organizing; a minimum of four years of community
organizing experience; significant experience in facilitating and
designing grassroots organizing trainings; good writing skills; ability
to work with people of diverse backgrounds; ability to do necessary
travel. Any additional experience with supervision or proposal writing a
plus, but not required. Minimum three year commitment required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Starting salary dependent on level of experience.

JOB OPENING: Community Organizer, Position 2
THE ORGANIZATION: SOCM, a state-wide, multi-issue, multi-racial
community organization working for social, economic, and environmental
justice in Tennessee, is seeking applications for a community organizer
position. At this time this organizing position will focus on SOCM’s
environmental justice work around coal including mountaintop strip
mining and mining in toxic coal seams.
RESPONSIBILITIES: SOCM’s coal work includes local organizing, state
policy work, and collaboration in a regional Alliance. This organizer
may be needed for other parts of SOCM’s multi-issue social justice work
in the future. SOCM is democratically run by its members and invests in
member leadership development as well as winning issues that affect
their lives. SOCM is committed to anti-racism work and to organizing
that builds greater racial diversity. Positions require some internal
fundraising and writing duties.
REQUIREMENTS: Commitment to social, economic, and environmental justice
through community organizing; ability to work with people of diverse
backgrounds; self-motivated and self-starting; ability to work
independently and cooperatively; own a car; willing to travel for field
time in different parts of the state.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Starting salary is $27,000+ depending on
