Organization Description
Tenants & Workers United (TWU) is a leading low-income, member-based,
grassroots organization located in the Washington metropolitan area. TWU
is nationally and regionally recognized in the field of low-income
community organizing for racial and economic justice. Since 1986, TWU
has grown to include hundreds of low-income members and supporters in
organization campaigns and chapters across the Northern Virginia suburbs
of Washington, DC. TWU is a growing organization, with a low-income
community-based Board of Directors, a highly experienced staff of 15,
over 1,000 dues-paying members and supporters, and an annual budget over
$1 million. TWU’s membership and leadership are predominantly low-income
and 75% of our leaders and active members are women and youths of color.
Associate Director
TWU is seeking an Associate Director with primary responsibility for
three areas of work: 1) leadership development - with a particular
concentration on women’s leadership development; 2)
multi-racial/multi-national organizational and campaign strategies; and
3) housing and Right to the City campaign organizing. The Associate
Director will directly contribute to our organization’s mission to build
the power of low-income people for racial, gender and economic justice
in the fast-changing Northern Virginia region by coordinating our
women-centered leadership development, multi-racial organizing and
coalition-building, and new majority movement-building advancing
affordable housing and low-income people’s Right to the City in Northern
Virginia. Principal responsibilities include:
· Develop and implement a program of integrated leadership development
centering on TWU’s majority women-of-color base, our current campaigns,
and our racial and economic justice mission.
· Support organizers in designing and using popular education materials
as campaign and leadership development tools.
· Coordinate strategic planning, base-building, and leadership
development efforts designed to build our base of African American and
African and Asian immigrant community members.
· Plan and oversee campaign activities geared to winning affordable,
low-income housing and strengthening low-income people’s participation
in and control over land-use and housing planning around the region.
· Represent TWU in regional and national Right to the City Alliance
activities.
· Supervise other staff in other key areas of organizational activity.
· Occasional research, writing and public speaking.
Qualifications
• Minimum five years of relevant paid experience, including supervisory
experience.
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to progressive social
change through base-building, low-income community organizing, and
leadership development approaches.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Excellent research skills.
• Ability to use email and web-based technology for organizing and
communication purposes.
• B.A. preferred.
• Bilingual English and one additional language preferred.

Community Organizer
TWU is seeking a Community Organizer to build the power of African
Americans and immigrants for racial justice in Northern Virginia. This
is a half-time (approximately 20 hours per week) position to start, with
an opportunity to increase to full-time. Using base-building, community
organizing, and leadership development approaches, the organizer will
organize, develop the leadership and build the power of African American
public school parents and teens in Alexandria City Public Schools as an
essential element of TWU’s College Preparation and Restorative Justice
for All Campaign. The organizer may also conduct outreach in Prince
William County Virginia to build broad community support for racial
justice and immigrant rights.
Responsibilities include:
· Identify and recruit African American, African and other immigrant
parents and teens.
· Implement community-based, strategic organizing and campaign plans.
· Facilitate the active participation and leadership of project members.
· Coordinate strategies with organization leaders and community allies.
· Shared TWU-wide organizing responsibilities for direct action and
major events
Qualifications
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to racial justice through

Community Organizer

fast-changing Northern Virginia region by coordinating our efforts to
win affordable housing for low-income people of color and build a new
majority movement advancing low-income people’s Right to the City in
Northern Virginia. Principal responsibilities include:
· Conducting coalition-based campaign activities geared to winning
affordable, low-income housing and strengthening low-income people’s
participation in and control over comprehensive community development
around the region
· Strengthening the existing coalition of religious congregations, labor
unions, smart growth advocates, and affordable housing, environmental,
and transportation groups.
· Building the base of tenant and low-income homeowners members.
· Developing the leadership of low-income community members - African
Americans, Latin at s and immigrants.
· Coordinating research vital to the Campaign.
· Shared TWU-wide organizing responsibilities for direct action and
major events.
Qualifications
• Minimum two years of relevant experience; housing and/or coalition
experience preferred.
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to progressive social
change and movement-building.

New Virginians Initiative Director
TWU is seeking a Director for our New Virginians Initiative (NVI), which
is geared to promoting naturalization and civic participation among
thousands of legal permanents residents in the Northern Virginia region.
Primary responsibilities include program development and implementation;
supervision of program personnel; public speaking and outreach; planning
and evaluation; contract administration and data management; and
communications strategy.
Specific Responsibilities
• Responsibility for developing, planning and administering the New
Virginians Initiative.
• Represent the program publicly and meets with program stakeholders;
establish and foster relationships with partner organizations and
government agencies.
• Program management: oversee day-to-day program management, including
compliance with workplan; collection of narrative, performance and
outcome data from staff; coordination with and reporting to local and
state government funders; and public benefits information dissemination.
• Staff management: supervision, including providing or arranging
necessary training, of county and city coordinators, volunteers, and
other program personnel.
• Coordinate the work of NVI with related organization efforts and civic
engagement initiatives;
• Coordinate NVI media campaign and messaging with affiliated organizations;
• Coordinate with staff to ensure compliance with financial reporting
requirements and spending according to approved budgets;
• Follow legislative and administrative developments concerning
naturalization and the rights of lawful permanent residents. Identify
issues of concern emerging from program implementation for formative
evaluation and to inform TWU and partners’ advocacy work.
• Manage, review and update distribution of outreach and informational
materials and see that all partners are getting materials translated.
• Insure that issues updates to public benefit materials are
disseminated, as needed.
• Coordinate provision of in-service trainings on naturalization,
civics, etc., to volunteers, community partners and other agencies as
needed or upon request.
• Convene a proposal evaluation team of personnel, volunteers and other
stakeholders, facilitate the team’s review process, and disseminate results;
• Work to inform and engage area partners in the overall mission of TWU
and the NVI;
• Other duties as assigned.
Specific Qualifications
• Five years of relevant community-based experience;
• Two years of experience in program administration, planning, and/or
evaluation, including supervisory experience;
• Knowledge and awareness of immigration law and policies, and
experience working with immigrants and/or refugees;
• Bilingual preferred -- English and a second language (preferably
Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Amharic, or Urdu).
• Strong commitment to racial and economic justice, empowerment, and
community leadership development.
• Demonstrated experience with diverse constituencies with varying
interests and needs;
• Experience with grantmaking and government funding strongly preferred;
• Public speaking and media experience;
• Excellent interpersonal, writing, speaking, and organizational skills;
• Detail oriented with the ability to juggle many different tasks
simultaneously and complete them in a timely manner;
• College degree, min. Bachelor’s Degree.
