CONTENTS

A Passion For Renewal
There can't be any population more "marginalized" than the inmates of
Mountain Institute, a medium-security penitentiary in British Columbia.
Over the last two years Mountain has also played host to a unique
experiment in social enterprise: InsideArt, a marketing co-operative for
inmate artists.

The Good News About CAP
In ten years, volunteers and community organizations have leveraged
Community Access Program grants five times over to make community
internet a part of the life and the development of towns and
neighbourhoods across the country. Why do the feds want to suffocate a
program that they should celebrate?

Les franchises d'entreprises sociales, vous connaissez ?
The "social franchise"is a way for social enterprises like Commodus of
Montréal to replicate proven products, services, and systems. It's also
a way for community groups to get on with running successful businesses,
not researching business ideas.

$2 million available . . .
After 20 years of loaning money to nonprofit organizations and social
enterprises, the Canadian Alternative Investment Co-operative still
faces one major obstacle: the failure of the sector itself to appreciate
how practical a tool debt can be.

All The Tools, All The Time
To get innovations in CED and social enterprise away from the margins
and into the mainstream of national life, we must deploy five major
tools simultaneously and persistently - across generations, in fact:
evaluation, replication and dissemination, procurement, public policy,
and financing.
