Job Announcement: Executive Director
The Marin Institute is an alcohol industry watchdog that works to stop the
alcohol industry from harming public health. The Marin Institute is a
national organization, based in Marin County, California that monitors the
alcohol industry's marketing and public influence activities, exposes its
harmful practices and efforts to hide the truth, and mobilizes community
action to counter the industry. The Marin Institute was established by the
Marin County Superior Court in 1987 as one of three major projects endowed
by the Leonard and Beryl Buck Foundation to benefit all humankind. Because
of this stable core funding and a very talented and dedicated staff, the
Institute is poised to build on its record of success countering the alcohol
industry's predatory practices.
Position Description
The Executive Director provides leadership and strategic direction for the
organization. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and
has responsibility for implementation of all decisions and policies of the
Board. In addition to oversight of the day-to-day administrative
functioning of the Institute, the Executive Director is responsible for
ensuring that programs and staff function in a manner consistent with the
strategic direction provided by the Board. Specifically, the Executive
Director position consists of the following responsibilities:
. Program: The Executive Director is responsible for the development,
implementation and evaluation of all programmatic activities of the
Institute including monitoring the marketing and public influence of the
alcohol industry; exposing the industry's harmful activities and efforts to
hide the truth, and mobilizing community action against the industry.
. Supervision: The Executive Director directly or indirectly
supervises all administrative and program personnel of the Institute and
establishes effective protocols for maximizing employee skills and
interests. The Executive Director is responsible for maintaining a system
for timely and effective performance and salary reviews across the
organization, and for performing such reviews with direct reports.
. Fundraising: The Executive Director is responsible for fundraising
for the Institute, including the identification of potential funding
sources, the development of grant proposals, oversight of contract and
government grants, maintaining and building relationships with individual
donors or funders and other fundraising activities and functions.
. Collaborations and Networks: The Executive Director represents the
Institute in collaborative relationships with local, state, and national
organizations and coalitions, and as a spokesperson for the media. The
Executive Director serves as the official staff liaison with the Court
appointed Special Master, the Marin Community Foundation; and other
organizations and institutions as appropriate and directed from the Board.
The Executive Director may travel as needed.
. Fiscal Accountability: The Executive Director is responsible for the
oversight and management of the Institute's fiscal health. The Executive
Director works closely with the Controller and senior program staff to
manage and oversee all fiscal operations.
. Administration: The Executive Director is responsible for oversight
of all administrative functions of the Institute, including personnel
policies and procedures, office management, program support, contract and
grant management, and compilation of organizational reports (e.g. reports
from the Executive Director, staff reports, Board packets, Annual Reports,
Etc.)
. Board of Directors: The Executive Director is responsible for
creating an environment conducive to collaboration between staff and Board.
The Executive Director is the staff liaison with the Board of Directors and
attends all Board and committee meetings.
Required Qualifications
Watchdog/Counter Industry
. Extensive proven leadership experience and demonstrated
accomplishment in efforts to change industry behavior (i.e. tobacco,
firearms, etc.), influence social/public policy and shift public opinion
. Significant experience working as a watchdog of corporate bad acts,
with a record of success using media advocacy and other counter marketing
techniques to weaken an industry adversary and change behavior
. Familiarity with research, analysis and program evaluation related
to counter industry efforts
Nonprofit Management and Leadership
. Visionary and creative leader with a demonstrated ability to inspire
others
. Extensive demonstrated experience in positions of leadership in
nonprofit organizations
. Demonstrated experience in Board management in the nonprofit sector
. Extensive experience as a supervisor with a team oriented approach
and skills in effective group process
. Strong financial management experience and skills, including
development and administration of budgets and audits
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
. Demonstrated ability to represent the Institute and deliver key
"counter industry" messages in media interviews, fundraising pitches and
public speaking opportunities
. Strong written and oral communication skills and experience
. Strong interpersonal skills: ability to communicate openly, remain
flexible, and maintain sense of humor
. Experience working with diverse populations, styles and workplaces
Web-based Advocacy
. Experience and knowledge of online advocacy, campaigns and
mobilization efforts
Preferred Qualifications
. Graduate degree in public health, public policy, social welfare,
law, political science, or related field
. Established working relationships with key individuals, funders and
organizations in the area of alcohol industry counter marketing, public
health advocacy or prevention, or similar watchdog efforts
. Knowledge and reputation in public policy or advocacy as it pertains
to alcohol
