[ed: the message below is actually a follow-up to an
announcement post, but contains information on environmental
justice organizing I thought all might find interesting. The original
post is at the end of the message.]

Special thanks to the Anti-Racist Environmental Coalition (listed
below) for stepping up and linking the EJC site. Gives us
international support.
Request for comments, please add the site to your links page and
share with your colleagues. The interest level is high. Republican
sponsorship is possible. With a little luck, things could move fast.
Let's celebrate a new law before the end of the year.
The Environmental Justice Coalition (EJC) seeks to develop an
Environmental Justice Act (EJA) to provide the framework for
protecting communities with the poorest health, greatest
concentration of environmental pollutants or least economic
development from additional sources of pollution. The EJC will
also develop an EJA that will provide communities with the poorest
health, greatest concentration of environmental pollution or least
economic development with mechanisms to attract sustainable
development projects. The EJA will provide communities with the
means to participate in the environmental permitting process and
will provide applicants for environmental permits with certainty
regarding site selection.

Congress is finally getting itself reestablished for the 108th
Congress. Committee assignments are finalized and the House is
back from a two week break. It is time to get serious about passing
an EJ Act in the 108th Congress.
If you have suggestions about the legislative language, now is the
time to submit your comments. The website bill is a working draft
that combines the best elements of all of the previous EJ bills with
current data. Share your thoughts.
The EJ Coalition has met with House and Senate leadership staffs
to discuss the EJ Act concept: Senate: Frist, Inhofe, Warner,
McCain, Carper, Lott; House: Boehlert, Tauzin, Solis, Udall, Wynn,
Lewis, Towns, Gillmor. Ideally, Inhofe and Tauzin as sponsors
introducing the bill would be ideal and would probably lead to
easier passage. Realistically, if we can get a McCain or Boehlert,
we might still have a good chance for passage. Regardless,
February is the month to get Republican lead sponsorship and
corresponding Democratic support. EJC has an aggressive
lobbying campaign for February. If you can't lobby, please
consider this email an informational contact.
