Last year, I asked for help with a project I was
working on, and received lots of information from
people about places to visit in Mexico, United States
(including Alaska and Hawaii) and Canada.

I suppose the best illustration of the issue I am
facing is that I got to the state level of
Australia-wide interviews with 34 other people and was
asked what could I do to help the people of the state
in which I live, rather than in the state where I work.

I live right on the border of 2 states in Australia,
and here I work with a large Indigenous population
across that border. As you can imagine, the border has
huge implications for health, dental, and education
issues to name just a few.

I am hoping to visit communities which have dealt
proactively with issues based around domestic violence,
alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, gambling addiction, gross
issues emanating for mental health problems which are
consistently unaddressed, and alienation of children
because of these, and other problems existing in homes.

In my area, I manage the adult learning facility, and
there are three nursing sisters serving about 500
people. There are visiting health professionals also.

What I am trying to find is how the overworked nurses
and I can work together to help people. I have already
looked at a model of delivering leadership for the men
in the community, and would welcome input from anyone
who can assist with that. Please understand that I have
little access to Social Workers, Psychologists, or
general mental health workers. I have a degree in
Psychology myself, but do not work in that field.

I am able to draw on expertise from outside the area,
but this means that the community has to learn how to
accept and trust these people before they are able to
work with them.

Please, if you know of models that have worked in small
communities, or you have worked with, or know of, a
model which has been successful, could you contact me.

My aim is to visit to look at working models in both
large and small centres in Mexico, US and Canada and
see how I can adopt or adapt these strategies for this
community. I would particularly welcome input from
Indigenous workers.

I received mail from a number of people last year, but
email addresses change with job changes, and I have
lost contact with many of you.

Many thanks everyone

Kay
