community building examples.]

Burlington, Vermont has done some excellent work with community building and
organizing in the Old North End neighborhood (the most diverse in the
state). It is also a leader in sustainable development.

Good examples of community building? Of course, it all depends on what you
mean by community building, a notoriously vague term. If you mean building
relationships and reknitting the social fabric, I recommend taking a look at
faith-based community organizing (FBCO) practiced by the Industrial Areas
Foundation, Gamaliel, PICO, DART and others. Interfaith Funders
(516-354-8922, interfaithfunders at yahoo.com) has a good, short introduction
to FBCO as well as a longer study of the state of FBCO today. Mark Warren's
book "Dry Bones Rattling" is an excellent study of the Texas IAF with a
special emphasis on how it brings people together across racial lines.
Richard Wood has a promising book that should be out shortly on the PICO
networks FBCO efforts.
