POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Research Scientist

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Consortium for Economic 
Opportunity seeks applications for a position as an “Research 
Scientist.” The Consortium, a core unit of the University’s 
“Milwaukee Idea,” works with community partners to extend the 
benefits of economic growth to all parts of metropolitan Milwaukee. 
Major activities of the Consortium include: applied research on 
economic development; technical assistance to community based 
organizations and small businesses; educational programs and 
workshops; and the development of certificate and degree 
programs in economic development.   

Responsibilities:  

· Conduct research on issues of economic opportunity. Special 
areas of interest to the Consortium include, neighborhood 
economic development, urban poverty, regional strategies, and 
urban labor markets.  

· Author reports and publications; pursue sources of external 
support for Consortium research; serve as research liaison to 
outside scholars and community partners working on economic 
revitalization.  

· Oversee the research infrastructure of the Consortium, including: 
coordinating projects involving faculty, students, and community 
partners; maintaining appropriate databases of economic 
indicators; linking the Consortium’s research to similar national and 
international efforts.  

Qualifications: Ph.D. degree strongly preferred in any of the 
following fields: Economics, Sociology, Geography, History, Urban 
Studies, Political Science, Public Policy, or Public Administration, 
with appropriate academic background in economic development 
issues. At least two years experience in the field of community 
economic development is highly desirable. Candidates with 
master’s degrees with exceptional records of experience in the field 
of economic development will also be considered. Excellent written 
and verbal communications skills required. Competence to 
undertake research and writing assignments with little direct 
supervision and work independently is essential.  

Appointment Type: 100%-time, annual basis, academic staff 
position. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience and 
qualifications (pay range $47,000 to $52,000). Full university 
benefits provided.
