From: Rich Cowan <rich at organizenow.net>
Version 0.8.7d of ODB (Organizers' Database), the free,
easy-to-use database tailored to small organizations
and grassroots campaigns, is now available. This
new version includes over 20 small improvements in
ease-of-use and accessibility.
Since the last release, ODB was taken on the road so
many of these changes were suggested by the dozens
of community groups that are now reviewing the software.
Since January 15 we have:
* presented demos of ODB in Durham NC, Philadelphia, DC, and
twice in Boston to groups of 11, 13, 45, 14, and 20 people.
* set up 2 email discussion groups, one for those just
testing ODB and one for those actually using it daily.
Please email our volunteer Ethan Hazzard-Watkins
(hazzard at macalester.edu) with your contact info if
you want to get on one of these lists.
* welcomed help from software developers Kathy Gannett and
Lakshmi Shivenanda in running ODB through rigorous tests.
* seen four more organizations start using ODB
* welcomed THREE new interns in our office!
* made plans for more demos in amherst (feb. 25), as well
as Atlanta, NY, orlando, miami, new orleans, and DC
You can download the new version using this web address:
Remember -- if you already have an earlier version, upgrading
takes just seconds and will NOT affect any of your data.
Just make sure that ODB is not running when you upgrade.
Please report an problems to: odb at organizenow.net
Detailed release notes are included below.

this work is pro bono, some can be paid) please email us.

B. New Features
a) Added a right-click feature in main menu to allow addresses
to be changed and the old address to be saved in the comments
b) Added a right-click feature on the search box of the main
menu so that you can now search both the first and second
line of an address easily
c) A home fax field is available (this is turned off by default)
C. Usability/Accessibility/Supportability enhancements
a) Modified the duplicate checking feature to allow you to
immediately view the list of duplicates
b) When you change an address that is marked expired
or incomplete, ODB asks if you want to clear the mail code.
c) Copyemails function tells you how many emails it copied if
there are more than 15 or less than one email copied
d) Revised the donation entry system to allow more options
for setting a new expiration date, and to fix one bug
e) Fixed tab order in select records, import forms,
people/groups entry, and main menu
f) Automatically strip leading zeroes off of the ward,
precinct, and district fields to avoid problems searching
on these fields.
g) Friendlier text prompts for backing up a database larger
than a diskette
h) IMPORTANT: changed the default extension to odb rather
than mdb to dissuade users from editing the databases with
Access which can cause problems. This does not affect
existing databases. Also changed default location where
the databases will be created to "ODB DATABASES" rather
then Organizers' Collaborative.
i) The Show Details button was made bigger and easier to
reach, in the main menu.
j) When opening a database file, the program will now
only display .odb and .mdb files by default; it will
allow you to choose "All files (*.*)" as well.
k) During data entry, after an error message ODB will
automatically move the cursor to the field needing
to be fixed.
D. Major Bugs Fixed
a) Fixed a problem where the wrong fields were used for groups
import, which could cause ODB to crash.
b) Fixed a rare problem affecting 0.8.7 versions only
where if you dragged the mouse a certain way when
customizing the type codes, ODB could crash.
c) Located a possible problem in the software that could
cause ODB to crash after you mark an address as expired.
E. Minor Glitches Fixed
a) Made some windows fixed single instead of resizable so users
couldn't maximize them
b) Made sure the program properly records the lastgift date if
two donations are entered out of order
c) Made sure the "redo query now" button would not appear
outside of donations mode in select rec.
d) Fixed the voting rights template to use just 1-letter type
e) Fixed problem where save and add payment button did not
reset the ledger view
f) Changed the length of remotepw setting field to allow up
to 30 characters, avoiding the problem where the "hidden"
notification was cut off
g) Fixed display bug that occurred when precinct is blank
and ward is not blank
h) ODB was not checking for very long text when you add
or modify any of the tracking codes, so it was
possible that someone trying to make ODB crash could
do so. They should not be able to do this any more.
i) Added a delay in extracting the zip code file in
order to make this operation work on more machines.
