The National Neighborhood Coalition and National Congress for Community
Economic Development Co-Host June Forum:
Faith Based Approaches to Community Development
When: Thursday, June 14, 2001, 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm
Where: National Trust for Historic Preservation, 1785 Massachusetts Ave.,
NW, 2nd Floor, Washington, DC
Public and private interests alike are recognizing the vital role of the
religious community in improving the economic health of poor communities.
Faith-based institutions and their leaders are important partners in
providing holistic approaches to community building that combine individual
and family empowerment, asset building, and community-based economic
development. Among NCCED's members, 20 percent of Community Development
Corporations consider themselves faith-based or have roots in religious
institutions.
NNC's June forum will focus the faith-based discussion specifically around
community development and the needs of low-income communities. Speakers will
share their observations about the role of faith-based groups in community
development and how current policy initiatives will address the community
development needs of poor neighborhoods.
Moderated by: Wheeler Winstead, Director for Faith Based Initiatives,
National Congress for Community Economic Development
Guest Speakers:
** Lisa Cummins, Associate Director, White House Office of Faith-based and
Community Initiatives
** Avis Vidal, Principal Research Associate, The Urban Institute
** John Walker, Director of Economic Development Programs, Congress of
National Black Churches
The Forum will also feature brief updates on other neighborhood issues.
