Along the same lines as the other suggestions (and possible additions to
COMM-ORG's "Funding" page):
Worth considering are community and regional
foundations with a focus on social justice (these tend to be more radical)
that may allow donors to specify areas of interest. Two examples, both of
which were founded as alternatives to mainstream philanthropy (ike United
Way):
Community Shares (in Knoxville, TN) is a workplace giving fund that raises
and distributes funds to thirty different groups that are working for
social, economic, environmental and political justice (for one example, see
www.tirn.org ).
Appalachian Community Fund whose motto is "Change not Charity" (see
http://www.korrnet.org/appafund/ . . . ) funds social change organizations
(rather than social service).
See also Resist (http://homepages.together.net/~gmfps/resist.htm) , a funder
based in Massachusetts that gives only to organizations working to shift
power. Resist's list of grantees would be a good place to look for worthy
organizations.
