Hello all:
In case this isn't on your radar yet, I thought you might be
interested to know about this planned anti-globalization action that will
take place later this month, to protest the controversial Summit of the
Americas in Quebec City.
Like the Seattle action against the World Trade Organization over
a year ago, the issues being protested here are diverse but converge around
three main issues: (1) That the restructuring of global economic policies
is occurring through an undemocratic process predicted to increase global
economic inequality and injustice; (2) that the concessions being made to
powerful business interests will erode (and already have eroded) worker
protections and well-being; and (3) that concessions are similarly
jeopardizing environmental protections as countries compete for the
attentions of global capital. (I hope this is not too much of an
over-simplification!)
Like many public protest actions, these are basic arguments about,
in a democratic framework, what rules should we follow -- and who
decides? Who gets to sit at the table, and in the end, who benefits and
who pays?

Indymedia, you may remember, was one of the results of Seattle and
completely changed the rules of how protest media works.]
