The deadline for nominating a leader or small group of leaders for a
Leadership for a Changing World award is January 5, 2001.  Leadership
for a Changing World seeks to recognize, strengthen and support leaders,
and to highlight the importance of leadership in improving peoples'
lives. The program seeks to confirm that resourceful leaders are
bringing about positive change in virtually every community.  Each year,
Leadership for a Changing World recognizes 20 outstanding leaders or
leadership groups not yet broadly known beyond their immediate community
or field. These leaders work in such areas as economic and community
development, human rights, the arts, education, human development,
sexual and reproductive health, religion, media, and the environment.
Awardees will receive $100,000 over two years to support their program
work, and will be provided an Independent Learning Account of $30,000
for learning activities that will advance their efforts. Over the
two-year program, awardees will participate in semi-annual program-wide
meetings designed to provide opportunities for shared learning and
collaboration among awardees, and with other leaders.  Awardees may use
these sessions to consider their leadership and program challenges, and
to explore new opportunities to develop their programs and further their
leadership skills.  Awardees will work with Leadership for a Changing
World to tell their stories to help raise public awareness of their
efforts, and to explore their unique approaches to leadership.  Awardees
will contribute to a research effort that will deepen the understanding
of leadership in communities.
