[ed: thanks to Larry for pointing us to Pacifica for more info on East
Timor. I will have a footnote.]

From: Larry Yates <lyates at essential.org>

Like Randy, I would like to hear more about that organizing. But there
is an immediate organizing story which you can hear about on Pacifica
Radio's Democracy Now at
http://www.webactive.com/webactive/pacifica/demnow.html

Allan Nairn, the only US reporter left in East Timor, tells the story of
Timorese refugees, journalists and UN staff uniting to change the UN
decision to completely pull out the UN presence in E. Timor. It's quite
a story, and clearly and consciously an organizing victory.

(I know there are some serious issues about Pacifica right now --
Democracy Now was itself censored one day by Pacifica -- but the
coverage from E. Timor is a priceless resource.)

The Center for Health, Environment and Justice was founded in 1981 by
Lois Marie Gibbs, leader of the Love Canal effort. CHEJ assists local
people to become empowered to protect their communities from
environmental threats. We are supported in part by our membership. If
you are interested in joining or contributing to CHEJ, membership dues
are $30 per year. You'll receive our quarterly magazine, Everyone's
Backyard.

[ed: yes, Larry's correct that Pacifica has gotten itself in some
political trouble on the left, but it's to their credit that anyone bothers
to criticize them. Pacifica is well worth the listen, and certainly a
critical listen.]
