Subject: Job Announcement UC Santa Cruz
The Department of Community Studies at the University of
California, Santa Cruz, invites applications for a full-time,
tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning July 1, 2000.
Community Studies is an interdisciplinary department with an
undergraduate major emphasizing field study with community-based social
change organizations. We seek candidates from a
wide range of disciplinary backgrounds with demonstrated expertise in
urban-based struggles for social justice. The successful
candidate's expertise will combine analysis of the multifaceted
structural conditions which give rise to racial, class, and/or gender
inequality in cities, or other sites of contention, with analysis of how
grassroots movements, community-based organizations,
and/or governmental programs seek to ameliorate and overcome such
inequality. We are especially interested in candidates with
field experience in multi-ethnic urban settings, particularly involving
youth, and who have a commitment to qualitative research.
In addition to teaching in their area of expertise, candidates are
expected to teach core courses and work individually with
students on senior theses. Successful candidates may also have the
opportunity to teach and work with UCSC graduate
students in their own discipline. Candidates should share a commitment
to working in an interdisciplinary environment. We
welcome candidates with experience integrating their scholarly work with
social change activism.
