Below is the original letter.
Dear Colleague;
We are writing to ask you to help us to complete an important study on
Community Based Research (CBR) in Canada.
Facilitating Best Practices in Community-Based Research (CBR) in Canada is a
research partnership between Dr. Beth Savan of the Institute for Environmental
Studies at the University of Toronto, Robb Travers, Director of Research and
the Wellesley Central Health Corporation (the project funder) and Sarah
Flicker, Chief Research Scientist at Wellesley Central Health Corporation. CBR,
a method for linking academics and community members and groups to do
action-oriented research is young, but promising, and we are keen to help it to
grow. This project will assess current barriers and facilitating factors to
CBR in Canada through a national survey of community-based researchers and
interested others. By participating in our survey you will help us to identify
barriers to and needed resources for CBR, as well as the factors that
facilitate effective research of this kind.
The information collected will culminate in a best practices manual, a set of
policy recommendations specific to community groups, universities, and funders,
and a strategy for knowledge exchange. This project will both compliment and
add to the existing body of Canadian CBR literature. At the same time, it will
fill an important gap by systematically identifying barriers and facilitators
to CBR, and making policy recommendations to address them.
We are distributing this letter to about 2000 individuals. Please help us in
this important project by taking between 10 and 15 minutes to complete our
web-based survey, simply by clicking on the link below. If you are not the
appropriate person within your organization to complete this survey, please
accept our apologies, and help us by forwarding this letter on to the
appropriate person.
Data will be electronically stored on a secure server (with password file
protection) at Wellesley Central Health Corporation and will only be accessible
to the Projects Principal Investigators, Advisory Committee members and staff.
A summary report of project findings and a guidebook with policy and best
practice recommendations will be made available when the project is complete.
By clicking on the link below, you are providing your consent to participate in
this research project. We have done everything possible to ensure your
anonymity, as the web technology we are utilizing will not allow us to trace
responses to individual participants. Your participation is voluntary and you
are not obligated to answer any question with which you are uncomfortable.
As a token of appreciation for completing the survey, you may submit a
confidential email and we will randomly select an e-mail address to award a
free registration to an advanced CBR Training Institute to be held in Toronto
in 2005. Details are provided at the end of the survey.
Once again, thank you for your participation and for making a contribution to
strengthen the foundation for CBR in Canada
Sincerely,
Beth Savan, PhD
Sarah Flicker, PhD (cand)
Robb Travers, PhD (cand)
