From announce at comm-org.wisc.edu Sat Jan 14 11:39:10 2012 From: announce at comm-org.wisc.edu (COMM-ORG announcements) Date: Sat, 14 Jan 2012 11:39:10 -0600 Subject: [Announce] Bill Moyers in Back! Message-ID: <4F11BDBE.7030006@comm-org.wisc.edu> From: Peter Dreier Friends and Colleagues: After almost two years of reluctant retirement, Bill Moyers, the most important American journalist of the past half-century, is back with a new television show, ?Moyers & Company,? that begins this month. ? Read Moyers? article in Truthout explaining why he decided to return to the air: http://www.truth-out.org/bill-moyers/1326216330. ? Read the New York Times? profile of Moyers from Sunday?s paper: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/arts/television/bill-moyers-returns-to-tv-but-not-with-pbs.html. ? Watch this wonderful interview with Moyers, about the tension between democracy and capitalism, conducted last week by Val Zavala of Los Angeles? KCET: http://www.kcet.org/shows/socal_connected/content/politics/bill-moyers-biggest-story-of-our-time.html ? Read Moyers? fantastic article, ?How Wall Street Occupied America,? in the November 21 issue of The Nation magazine: http://www.thenation.com/article/164349/how-wall-street-occupied-america In the spirit of Moyers? muckraking journalism, take a look at Donald Cohen?s article in Huffington Post on light bulb wars. The Republicans are so desperate to attack government that they?ve resorted to attacking new regulations that encourage Americans to buy more energy-efficient light bulbs. Michele Bachman introduced the Light Blub Freedom of Choice Act last year to repeal the new standards. "President Bachmann will allow you to buy any light bulb you want in the United States of America," she said after announcing her presidential bid. "I believe in liberty for light bulbs," she said in a speech last November. Hopefully a reporter will ask one of the remaining GOP presidential candidates if they share Bachmann?s enthusiasm for ?liberty for light bulbs.? Cohen?s article puts this silly debate in its proper context. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/donald-cohen/light-bulb-standards_b_1192981.html Finally, for folks in the Los Angeles area, tonight (Wednesday) I will be speaking on a panel -- along with Rabbi Jill Jacobs (executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights), New York City Council member Brad Lander, and historian/activist David Levitus --on the topic, "What's So Jewish About the Occupy Movement?" The event is sponsored by the Progressive Jewish Alliance and Jewish Funds for Justice. It will be held at the Beth Chayim Chadashim synagogue, 6090 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90035. The "nosh" starts at 6:30 pm and the panel at 7 pm. All are invited.
