Virtually none of the root causes of the global economic crisis have
been fixed. The entire crisis – tens of millions unemployed, millions
of families losing their homes, and a worldwide recession – could happen
again tomorrow.

It is still legal to peddle subprime loans with sky-high interest rates
and penalties that lock people into to impossible debt traps. We’ve
seen payday loans with more than 1,000% interest in Central Illinois,
and there are more than four times as many payday loan companies in
Kansas City than McDonalds. If you are an African American borrower
looking for a loan from Wells Fargo – you will get a high cost loan
three times as often as whites with similar incomes. Banks are
charging hundreds of millions of dollars in overdraft fees rather than
simply denying the charges for people’s Starbucks addictions.

Chances are you or people you know are dealing with one or more of the
problems listed above. The fact that new toasters get more government
scrutiny before they’re sold than mortgages do should tell you something
about the glacial pace of financial reform.

While most families will struggle to put food on the table during the
December holiday season, the big banks and Wall Street will be handing
out BILLIONS of dollars in bonuses again. And if all of this doesn’t
make your blood boil, guess what? The bankers are throwing themselves a
three-day party in Chicago to celebrate their success in preventing
common sense financial reform from moving forward this year.

Well, enough is enough! You can turn your frustration and anger into
powerful action at the Showdown in Chicago, October 25-27th 2009.
Thousands of people from across the country are mobilizing to crash the
bankers’ party, and inject a new sense of urgency into the public
debate. It's time to fix the financial system so that it works for, not
against, the American people.

The Showdown in Chicago will have teach-ins, rallies, and most
importantly – actions on the streets to show the banks and Congress that
the American people want real change and reform NOW! It’s time to make
Congress decide – whose side are you on? The side of the American
people or Wall Street and the Big Banks?
