Call for Proposals for Special themes:
* Community Leadership
* School - Community Learning Collaborations
* Popular Education and Advocacy: Refugees and Asylum
Seekers
PROPOSALS OUTLINE
Proposals should be received by August 16th, 2002. Proposals for
papers
and workshops should include:
* a title
* names of authors with full contact details and brief narrative
resume/s
* a summary of about 200 - 400 words.

Some Leading Questions
* What is leadership? Is it characterised by seniority or
superiority? Do excellence and role modelling define it? Is
leadership about management skills?
* Who are community leaders? Is there a difference between
individual
leadership, group leadership, community leadership, political
leadership, organisational leadership and 'social movement'
leadership?
* Is there a different perspective relating to fields of practice,
sectors and agencies?
* What do community leadership programs that inspire and
support
others to be actively involved in addressing local issues look
like?
* How to work with and support recognised and emerging
community
leaders?
* How effective has community leadership been? How is
community
leadership developed?
* Is there too much reliance on volunteer efforts?

involved in them? What makes for a learning collaboration

schools and communities? What distinguishes them from other

community links? What are TAFE - community learning
collaborations
and who is involved in them? Who is involved in these
collaborations and how do they contribute to learning processes?
Who are the constituents of 'community'?
* Productive Pedagogy and Finding Common Ground: How do
you do it?
How can school community learning collaborations contribute to
more
productive pedagogies in schools? In what ways can they
effectively
engage young people at risk? What challenges do workers face
that
make it difficult for effective learning to take place in
collaborations?
* How should we evaluate learning collaborations? What makes a
school
community learning collaboration successful? Is there a place for
measuring qualitative outcomes as an evaluation tool? Should
evaluations move beyond quantitative outcomes if learning is
the
objective? What are the different traditions of building school

THE 'EDUCATION AND SOCIAL ACTION' CONFERENCE building
on the tradition
of previous conferences organised by the Centre for Popular
Education
will:
* bring people engaged in different fields of social action and
education together
* be a forum where activists, workers, policy makers, artists and
scholars alike are encouraged to participate
* encourage research and enquiry to promote practice that helps
people analyse and address social injustices
* have workshops that are sufficiently long to have decent
discussions or engage in hands-on activities
* have plenty of music, theatre and dance; but more importantly
there
will be some opportunities for collaborative art-practice.
