POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Organizer
Salary Range: $24,000-$30,000 (dependent upon experience and demonstrated
capacity), plus benefits
Reports To: Francie Hunt, State Director, Tennessee
Date Required: Position Available Immediately
Overall Description of Position:
Stand For Children, a national membership organization with chapters in Oak
Ridge and Murfreesboro and developing chapters in Lebanon and Clarksville,
is seeking an experienced Organizer to join our organizing efforts in
Tennessee. The Organizer will work with volunteer leaders throughout
Middle Tennessee to develop Stand For Children Chapters which:
Build a broad-based local voice for children and families.
Win local victories on issues affecting children and families through
collective action, primarily in areas of childcare, health and education.
Help support the Organizer's work with membership dues.
Attract a strong local base of support by building relationships through
one on one meetings..
Coalesce to influence public policy, primarily at the state level.
Specific Duties:
During each local Chapter organizing drive, the Organizer will:
Identify, recruit, and develop Stand For Children Chapter leaders, to a
significant extent from within existing organizations such as
congregations, schools, Head Start, child care centers, or civic
organizations..
Bring the leaders together and, as the base builds and drive progresses,
provide training on key aspects of the organizing process, including how
to: conduct a one on one meeting, research and choose an issue, produce
turnout, work with the media, meet with elected officials and
decisionmakers, hold an accountability session/action, and how to evaluate
each step in our organizing efforts..
Qualifications and Personal Qualities
Two years community organizing or related experience; ability to work
doggedly and strategically and toward challenging goals; the stamina to
work in an ever changing environment through each stage of the organizing
drive; commitment to learning and growth; excellent listening and verbal
skills; passion for the well-being of children and a fire in the belly for
justice; ability to identify and develop volunteer leaders; a sense of
humor.
Knowledge of children's issues and familiarity with faith-based
institutions, Head Start, schools, and child care centers helpful.
