For anyone who might be unfamiliar with the concept, a "road show" is a
multi-media phenomenon that generally involves a speaker, a musician, and a
video showing, and that's what this one's all about, too. During the last
three weeks of April, LOUISE BENALLY and DAVID ROVICS will be traveling
together on the eastern seaboard, bringing attention to the situation on Big
Mountain in northeastern Arizona, where traditional Dineh (Navajo) people who
have lived there for generations are being forcibly relocated by federal
authorities and moved onto uranium-contaminated wasteland in order to make
way for the expansion of North America's biggest coal mine.
LOUISE BENALLY has been an environmental and human rights activist since she
was a child first witnessing the injustices commited against her people, the
Dineh people of Big Mountain. She is involved with the daily struggle of
resisting government harassment just by continuing to live on Big Mountain.
Also, as a member of the Indigenous Environmental Network, the International
Indian Treaty Council and other organizations, she has traveled widely to
educate the outside world about events on Big Mountain and elsewhere in
Indian country and the world at large. As a founder of the Dineh Alliance,
she has been involved in an on-going lawsuit against Peabody Coal. Bilingual
in both the Dineh language and English, she was the key translator for the
documentary, "Broken Rainbow." In 1989 she received the Reeboks Human Rights
Award for her efforts.
"Louise Benally lives the spirit of the warriors of the past."
--Leonard Peltier
DAVID ROVICS is a traveling rabble-rousing folksinger who spends his time
stirring up trouble throughout North America and Europe, singing songs about
Big Mountain and a plethora of other issues on campuses, folk clubs,
protests, and elsewhere.
"Listen to David Rovics..."
--Pete Seeger
