Community-Based Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

We are attempting to locate community-based relief efforts in the Gulf region.  Please help by adding to this list.  You can add organizations yourself, or send contact info to Randy Stoecker at rstoecker@wisc.edu.  We have not verified all the information listed, so please contact individual organizations if you wish to make an individual donation.  Most have donation links on their websites.

Locally-based grass-roots organizations

Criteria:

  1. Its pre-Katrina address was in an effected community.
  2. It is governed by the people it serves.
  3. It is currently involved in relief efforts (including organizing efforts).

Organizations providing self-help and self-advocacy efforts to displaced residents in shelters outside of the region.

Criteria:

  1. It is building formal or informal self-governing organization among shelter residents.
  2. It is assisting shelter residents to advocate for their needs.
