The 1997-98 Planners Network forum in New York City kicks off on October 17, with Youth and Crime: Beyond the Scapegoat Generation.
The recent focus on decreasing national and local crime rates has obscured the emergence of another trend. Policies, from stricter curfew laws to juvenile sentencing reforms, reflect an increasingly suspicious and hostile view of youth, especially urban youth. This forum will examine techniques that young people themselves are using both to understand and reduce crime in their communities and to change the perception of youth as offenders. Their methods include political mobilization and organizing, inquiry into justice and its administration, and peer mediation for conflict resolution.
Panelists will include representatives from Youthforce and participants in the Justice Scholars Program at the Vera Institute of Justice.
