ECONOMIC HUMAN RIGHTS: THE TIME HAS COME!

Creating a Fairness Agenda For America

Come to the Ad Hoc Congressional Hearing

Show you Care!!

Saturday, May 2, 1998

1:30 - 4:30 pm

Edward R. Roybal Auditorium, Federal Building

1301 Clay Street, Oakland

Fifty years ago, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), committing governments to provide a standard of living adequate for the health and well being of their citizens.

TODAY WE HAVE A PROBLEM.

Here in the richest country on Earth, we are not living up to this commitment. Thirty million Americans are HUNGRY, five to seven million Americans are HOMELESS. More than forty million Americans have NO HEALTH INSURANCE. And the percentage of American children living in POVERTY is 22% - the highest of any industrialized country.

Food First is proud to unite with the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and the People for Bread, Work and Justice to organize a day of action on May 2., 1998. The day will begin with marches organized by the People for Bread, Work and Justice, which will join together for a rally at the Oakland Federal Building at noon. At 1:30 pm, the ad hoc Congressional hearing will begin which will address violations of basic economic human rights in the U.S. After the hearing, the Congressional Progressive Caucus will release its Fairness Agenda for America. Fairness Agenda for America is a project of the IPS and the Progressive Challenge.

CALL 1-888-38-STAND UP TO LET YOUR SENATOR KNOW THAT YOU SUPPORT HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE U.S. AND DEMAND THE RATIFICATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL COVENANT ON ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS WHICH GUARANTEES EVERYONE THE RIGHT TO AN ADEQUATE STANDARD OF LIVING.

(Senate switchboard is only open from 9 am-5 pm est. Action time will remain active from 4/23/98 to 5/1/98) Free Calls courtesy of Working Assets Long Distance.
