Call for papers on "Christian Hegemony" (apologies for x-posting...please share with other interested individuals and lists...thanks!)
Editorial Collective of Socialist Review 1095 Market Str., Rm. 618, San Francisco, CA 94103 USA
The Editorial Collective of Socialist Review is currently seeking papers on christian hegemony for an upcoming special issue. Though unmarked, Christianity pervades cultural, political, social, and intellectual institutions in the United States and much of the Western world. We are looking for work that marks and makes visible christian hegemony/privilege as other scholarship has named and interrogated white hegemony/privilege, male privilege, heterosexism, and classism. We are interested in submissions which critique Christian hegemony from diverse perspectives.
Possible topics may include (but certainly are not limited to) the following:
* How are christian hegemony and Western imperialism constitutive of one another?
* Analyses of the ways in which non-christian individuals and groups are marked and conceptualized within the framework of christian hegemony as well as the ways that non-christian Others are constructed in the social imaginary.
* What are the imperialistic, historical processes through which christianity became hegemonic?
* What have been (and are) the social and political ramifications of a christocentric world view?
* How can christian hegemony be subverted?
* An elucidation of the intersections of christian hegemony and other hegemonic paradigms (of race, class, gender, sexuality, etc.).
* Investigations of the cultural capital and privilege maintained by christian non-believers. What are the ways in which christian hegemony persists for christians who renounce their faith or were raised only nominally christian?
* Revisitations of the myths and realities of church-state separation in the U.S. What are some of the ways that christianity is assumed and privileged within state and state-sponsored forums?
* Explorations of the unacknowledged/unmarked/unearned privilege accorded to christians.
Articles, commentaries, communiques, and reviews intended for this special issue should be submitted no later than 1 January 1999. Please send at least two paper copies of proposed manuscripts. Submissions should be typed and double spaced. If accepted, manuscripts need to be resubmitted on 3.5 inch diskette and use endnotes for citation.
