Lead Organizer Sought for SMEAC
The mission of Save Middle East (Baltimore) Action Committee, Inc.
(SMEAC) is to inform residents and other stakeholders of Middle East
Baltimore of their rights to live, work and worship in a stable
neighborhood that is safe and secure in its environment and financial
standing and to give the Middle East Baltimore Community the power to
organize, control, plan and create the direction in which it grows.
SMEAC was formed in 2001 by residents as a community organizing,
advocacy, and planning vehicle for stakeholders and residents of the
Middle East neighborhoods that will be displaced by the establishment of
a biotech park. SMEAC is considered a leading organization in Baltimore
in the fight for affordable housing and against unaccountable economic
and community development.
The Lead Community Organizer will play key role in building and
maintaining strong relationships with Middle East residents,
community-based organizations and other institutions in the neighborhood
and in generating broad-based support for affordable housing and
economic development initiatives. The position reports to the Executive
Negotiable based on experience.
. Act as lead organizer in the Middle East neighborhood of Baltimore;
. Conduct outreach to involve residents in holding East Baltimore
Development Inc., and the City of Baltimore accountable to treat the
residents of the Middle East with dignity and respect as EBDI redevelops
. Identify and develop new leadership for SMEAC thru neighborhood and
block by block organizing campaigns.
. Help the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to take on
community organizing campaigns around affordable housing and economic
development, including participation in local and state-wide advocacy
. Work with the Executive Director to coordinate SMEAC'S various
committees and to facilitate workshops and planning sessions;
. Build and maintain relationships with neighborhood leaders and
. Assist with outreach efforts around community events.
. Extensive experience (minimum of 2-3 years) in community organizing
. Knowledge of community planning and development issues
. Experience in providing training, technical assistance and
organizational development to a diverse population
. Ability to work as part of a dynamic team
. Self-motivated and resourceful
. Willingness to work a demanding and flexible schedule, including
nights and weekends
. Knowledge of East Baltimore neighborhoods a plus
. Knowledge of computer word processing and database programs preferred
