New Union Charts Course for Future at Founding Convention
Combined Strength Means Organizing the Unorganized on Larger Scale
Over 1400 delegates of UNITE, the clothing, textiles and laundry union
and HERE, the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union, took a
historic step on July 8, 2004 by voting to merge the two unions. Both
unions had a rich, militant history of fighting for—and
winning—major gains for working people in the U.S. and Canada. Both
are dedicated to building a bright future for workers.
UNITE HERE came out of its founding convention with a renewed commitment
to growth because when it comes to workers' rights, bigger is better.
With nearly half a million members, UNITE HERE will be in a better
position to organize workers on a broad scale and to raise standards in
its industries and communities, and particularly for recent immigrants
and people of color. For convention news coverage and ongoing news about
UNITE HERE, go to the union’s new website:

Job Opportunities
This merger means launching more large-scale, strategic organizing
campaigns focused on the multi-national corporations that are exploiting
workers throughout the world, and seeing those campaigns through to
victory. More campaigns means more exciting job opportunities for
organizers and campaign researchers on campaigns in industrial
laundries, hotels, gaming, food service and other industries.
UNITE HERE IS LOOKING FOR ACTIVISTS COMMITTED TO SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE
, civil rights, the rights of immigrant workers and organizing the
unorganized. Positions are available in locations throughout the U.S.
