Community Organizer 

The Lawndale Neighborhood Organization (LNO) is a grassroots,
multi-issue, community organization working on the Westside of
Chicago.  The mission of LNO is to build a powerful neighborhood
organization by uniting large numbers of residents in the
Lawndale area around common issues that are affecting the
community and developing strategies that will improve these
situations.  Our work is based on the belief that community
residents are the true experts on what is needed in their
community and should be included in the decisions that affect
their lives.

Responsibilities:
The organizer will be responsible for developing and working with
a team of neighborhood leaders in their efforts to address issues
(i.e. neighborhood safety, jobs, prompt city services, quality
education, abandoned properties, predatory lending) in the
community.  The organizer will also be responsible for assisting
other staff with campaigns and performing office/clerical duties
as needed.  

Daily responsibilites will include:
-Doorknocking and setting up 1-on-1 meetings to talk with
residents about their concerns. -Working with residents to
conduct neighborhood and community-wide meetings to identify
issues and develop strategies to address these issues
-Identifying and developing new leaders. -Organize public
meetings and direct actions to hold public officials accountable
-Researching information on issues identified by residents.
-Weekly meetings with Director to discuss progress, strategize on
issues, and reflect on work.

Qualifications:
-Strong belief in the power and value in grassroots social
change. -Good listening and people skills. -Comfortable working
in low-income, predominately African-American community
(including evenings). -Ability to think beyond the box and work
independently. -Not afraid of confrontation and conflict
(including direct action). -Good writing and phone skills.
-Ability to make a 2 year commitment to the
organization/community.

Salary:
$22,000-$28,000 based on experience with competitive benefits
package.
