HOUSING WORKS, INC.		NEW YORK CITY ISSUES 
ORGANIZER

Housing Works, the nation ' s largest community-based AIDS 
organization, seeks to hire a NYC Issues Organizer carry out 
organizing and advocacy on New York City issues.  

 Position Duties:

 *	Organize and educate Housing Works clients and PWAs 
throughout the five boroughs on City HIV/AIDS and related issues;
 *	Advocate with executive agencies and City Hall and with the 
NYC 
Council on issues of importance to Housing Works clients;
 *	Carry out weekly legislative visits on relevant issues during the 
New York City Budget process;
 *	Contribute to the weekly newsletter;
 *	Conduct research and community organizing via the internet;
 *	Develop working partnerships with national, regional and local 
HIV/AIDS, housing, harm reduction, Communities of Color, LGBT and 
other advocacy and service provider groups;
 *	Supervise the Administrative Assistant and Peer Advocates

 Issue Areas:

 *	HIV/AIDS including the Ryan White Planning Council and the 
NYC 
Prevention Planning Group
 *	Supportive Housing
 *	Substance Abuse and Mental Health
 *	Harm Reduction
 *	Health Care disparities based on race and/or gender
 *	Civil Rights for People Living with HIV/AIDS and other 
Disabilities
 *	LGBT Rights.

 Qualifications:
 *	Experience in local advocacy and community organizing;
 *	Understanding of and commitment to aggressive advocacy on 
HIV/AIDS and homelessness;
 *	Top-level organizing, writing and teamwork skills;
 *	Ability to work independently and on some evenings and 
weekends;
 *	Ability to organize low-income PWAs around issues that impact 
their 
lives;
 *	Understanding of and commitment to harm reduction principles;
 *	Ability to carry out culturally competent and racially aware 
organizing work  -  ability to speak Spanish and/or other languages a 
plus;
 *	Commitment to multi-level advocacy, including direct action and 
civil disobedience;
 *	Excellent database creation and internet research and 
publishing 
skills a must;
 *	Ability to create spreadsheets, presentations, HTML and 
graphic 
design a plus.
